NOTE:   Closest to the holes for June are #5 & #14.

Tuesday’s game was played at Meadow Lake Acres, just 15 minutes north of Jefferson City.  MLA  is a Par-72 course that features excellently maintained practice facilities, very nice tee boxes, heavy roughs, bent grass fairways, soft but fast greens and fabulous green surrounds.  Although, not overly trapped, water came into play several times and the fairways are lined with trees draping over on many holes… ala the right side of our #12 fairway.  MLA is fairly flat, well maintained, with nice rest stops on the course, that included clean rest rooms, ice machines and water. The club has a very nice pro shop, dining area and locker room.

We played a $10 game.  The three teams of four were handicapped so that each team had a total quota of 109, plus or minus one. We played a team two dollar Nassau , counting the best three scores.  There was one dollar singles with Nassau paying three places and two closest to the holes at $0.50 per hole.

Tuesday was a day of fun, and the scores were not used to update our quotas.

Golf Stuff: Before golf tees, players would shape mounds of sand and place the golf ball on top. Tees were finally popularized in the 1920s.  The term “birdie” was coined accidentally by Ab Smith, who hit a “bird of a shot” in 1889.  A score of three under par is called an “albatross.  A “condor” is a term given to a hole-in-one on a par 5.  It is almost as rare as two hole-in-ones in a single game of golf.

Golf Quote: “For this game you need, above all things, to be in a tranquil frame of mind.” – Harry Vardon

Golf Stuff: Learning course management helps more golfers than anything. Realizing when to go pin seeking, when it’s smart to hit an iron off the tee rather than driver, or knowing where the best place to miss is on a par 3 to avoid big numbers; Rather than trying to 'thread the needle' between trees, take your medicine and punch out. Basically… how to think your way around the course.
