Mike Clark in Scotland - Days 4 & 5

Yesterday I had a rather uneventful day as I played Tain again. I was paired with 2 younger guys who could not keep it on the course.

I spent the majority of my round climbing over sand dunes and thru tall fescue and gorse looking for these two guys golf balls. They absolutely did not want to give up on a nugget and the 3 minute rule was definitely not in effect. It made for a long day.

Today was a much different story as I jumped in the Mercedes and headed farther north to Golspie Golf Club. I had an 820 tee time but when I arrived no one was there, and when the pro finally showed up to check me in, I ended up playing by myself. I assumed the place would be super busy as it’s every bit as nice as any high end ocean front course in the states. At face value I’d compare it to Kiawah Island.

Most of this fabulous links course plays along the ocean and sand dunes but for 4 holes it takes a turn into the Scottish pine forest. I loved everything about this course other than the 18th hole. It’s a strong finishing hole of 435 yards with a huge dune in the middle of the fairway about 240 yds from the tee. It serves to block the approach leading to a blind 200 second shot to a well bunkered green.

Not a fan of that… just having to guess your line when you are trying to shoot a good score. After my round I cruised over to Royal Dornoch to do some chipping and putting on their massive practice green. It’s been a very nice day and I feel blessed to be here. The weather has been great and today is the first day that the wind was really blowing.

Mike Clark in Scotland - Day 3

Well I’m officially a Toffs Honorary Member. The Toffs is the senior men’s group at Tain…. Tains-over-fifty-five.

I was met with some speculation and a lot of scrutiny when our pro Stewart Morison asked if there would be a spot for me to play with the men’s group this morning. It would be the same as if an outsider wanted to play with the points game and the newcomer was riding with Hall propping a foot up on the windshield of Bills cart.

Luckily I played great today, managed a 73 despite taking a snowman on the par 5 4th and had the best time and a lot of laughs with my two playing partners.

We all had a pint when we were finished and I was told I’m officially in the fold and invited to play in the upcoming inter club match against Brora on Monday at Tain.

This afternoon I made the decision to play a hidden gem 9 hole track in the mountains called Bonar Bridge. It’s only about a 25 minute white knuckle drive to the course, but I was not quite prepared. Imagine driving on the wrong side of the road, on a road with hairpin turns, no shoulder, barely wide enough to accommodate 2 vehicles and stone walls only inches from the left side of my precious Mercedes SUV…. All at a speed way too fast for the conditions.

I’m sure the scenery was spectacular but I never saw any of it as I was fixated on the road and doing my absolute best not to swipe an oncoming car or a rock wall. By the time I reached the course my hands were cramped from squeezing the life out of the steering wheel.

Bonar Bridge is a lovely mountain course of just 9 holes and it was in immaculate condition. I did my best to take a few pictures, but they just cannot do the place the justice it deserves. I pretty much had the entire course to myself and only saw 2 other players several holes ahead of me. It was a very relaxing 9 hole walk and I played 2 balls off and on.

However I ended the day on a somewhat unnerving note. The ninth hole is a tight slightly uphill 311 yard par four and after a good drive with a 5 iron, I found myself 152 to the green.  The tiny clubhouse at Bonar is adjacent to the green and their small patio and walkway is maybe 10 yards at most from the edge of the putting surface.  Needless to say, I knew I was in trouble the moment the club made contact with the ball. It was one of those shots you wish you could take back as I watched in horror as my TPX 5 violently pull hooked left and careened off the side of the clubhouse. Luckily it hit stucco and not glass but I’m 100% certain that I’m the only man from Missouri that has hit the clubhouse at Bonar Bridge in the Scottish Highlands on his second shot.

Golf Stuff: How often are you really having fun on the golf course? I hope your answer is all of the time. But if not, what’s the point of playing if golf isn’t something you regularly enjoy? Playing with confident thoughts will keep challenges in perspective, focus your attention on leveraging the strengths in your bag, and help you feel as though nothing can stand between you and your target. Make a point of keeping the game a game. – Tiger Woods.

Mike Clark in Scotland - Days 1 & 2

Hello from the Highlands of Scotland! After a painless flight and an unexpected rental car upgrade from a boxy midsize to a slick silver Mercedes SUV, I was cruising on the left side of the road white knuckle squeezing the steering wheel on my way out of Inverness and pointed north to the small burg of Tain. I arrived late wed afternoon jet lagged but eager to see the course that I joined “Tain Golf Club”. It was founded in 1890 and is an Old Tom Morris design. Old Tom was a busy guy in his day with over 100 courses bearing his credentials.

I joined this club as it’s a true links layout with history. It is situated right on the Dornoch Firth, and the town is centrally located in the highlands of Scotland and surrounded by a multitude of tremendous links courses within an hours drive that I’d like to play.

Joining a club I’ve never seen or played was certainly a gamble but I was just really pleased with what I found. Very friendly staff and pro and a golf course that is playing hard and fast but challenging and fair. Links golf is so different from the game we play at FCCC. The ball rolls and bounces. You can hold the green with a well struck wedge, but greater clubs need to be played short of the green to allow for the forward bounce.

I managed to play 9 jet lagged holes Wednesday late afternoon but today I played 36 with some flashes of really good golf and the usual run of bad breaks that are the reality check. There has been moderate wind and some light rain but overall the weather has been exactly what you’d expect in Scotland.

Tomorrow I’ll play another 18 at Tain and perhaps branch out in the afternoon to explore another nearby links to sharpen up. I’ll be gearing up for Royal Dornoch in the near future and would like to get better acclimated to links golf before taking that one on.

Right now my server just brought my steak and ale pie and it’s got my full attention.
