Tuesday, November 19th: Hall (+6) Edges Out Johnson (+5) !!!

NOTE 1:  Green Committee Meeting:  Last night, Dave Dister made an excellent presentation regarding our greens and the new Gold and Red tee boxes. Dave's presentation gave some historical and architectural perspective regarding the 'target' nature of our greens and stressed the importance of striking a balance between green firmness & speed with pin placements. Although, per PGA rules, there are no illegal pin placements... The USGA recommends having the 'possibility' to stop the ball 2 feet past the hole from all directions.  Interestingly, Ed admitted that he delegated pin placements to a new guy, who has definitely made some mistakes. Ed will work with him to avoid 'Ed's Revenge' type of pin placements. Dave provided pictures of issues with several tee boxes. The committee will look to make adjustments during the next phase of tee box upgrades. Thank's Dave!!!! ... Text me your email address at 314-494-5049 if you would like a copy of Dave's presentation. Cheers... Tom⛳️

Golf Stuff:  Lower compression balls generate more spin, which can be helpful for controlling the ball on the course. Higher compression balls generate less spin, which can be helpful for hitting longer shots. Third, compression affects feel. Lower compression balls feel softer, while higher compression balls feel firmer.  Golfers that aren't as fast off the tee should consider utilizing a golf ball with an 80 or below rating. These golf balls provide the right amount of compression that matches up perfectly with slower swings to deliver superb results while providing optimal control and feel.

Thursday, November 7th: Moosman is Lone Positive (+1) !!!

From this blogger’s experience and observations, the cooler weather and increasing winds are creating challenges with club selection / distance control for many of us. See the ‘Golf Stuff’ section below for some interesting insights into these issues.

NOTE:   Closest to the holes for November are #3 & #11.

Golf Quote: “I have really enjoyed every minute I have spent in golf- above all, the many wonderful friends I have made. I have loved playing the game and practicing it. Whether my schedule for the following day called for a tournament round or merely a trip to the practice tee, the prospect that there was going to be golf in it made me feel privileged and extremely happy, and I couldn’t wait for the sun to come up the next morning so that I could get out on the course again" – Ben Hogan

Golf Stuff:  Colder air increases both the lift and drag forces acting on the ball, which results in a slightly higher and shorter trajectory. Distance loss can also result from playing with cold golf balls. One study suggests that you can lose five mph of clubhead speed in cold weather conditions. This means that with a driver, you will lose about 10-13 yards in distance simply because you can't swing the club as fast as you can when you are in peak summer conditions.  Golfers will lose about two yards, with each club in their bag for every 10-degree drop in temperature below 75 degrees.  On the flip side, golfers will gain two yards, or more, with every club 10-degree increase above 75 degrees...... Wind conditions will also need to be factored in on distance control.  Headwinds: the mph of wind will be the yards to add to distance. For example, 10mph of wind adds 10 yards to the distance the shot will play. Tailwinds: take half the mph of wind and make it the yards of distance to subtract. For example, 10mph of wind will subtract 5 yards from the distance the shot will play.

Golf Quote: “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course… The space between your ears.” – Bobby Jones.

Golf Stuff:  A shipment of golf equipment to Charleston, South Carolina in 1739, aided in the founding of the South Carolina Golf Club in 1787 and an advertisement for golf clubs and balls in the Royal Gazette of New York City in 1779.  However, much like other parts of the world who adopted the sport early, no real traction was gained until early 19th century. In 1894 the United States Golf Association was formed to become ambassadors for the game in the states, which by 1910 was host to 267 golf clubs.

Golf Quote: “A golfer has to train his swing on the practice tee, then trust it on the course.” - Dr. Bob Rotella

Golf Stuff:  Around 1750 the world of golf saw the first club heads made entirely of iron. By 1826 hickory wood became the standard for shafts due to its impressive durability.  By the 1870s factories were able to mass-produce iron clubs. This pushed the blacksmiths out of business as the factories could make them cheaper, faster, and with more consistency. The 20th century saw a lot of experimentation with club design but there were no significant changes besides the introduction of grooves on the clubface. In 1908 it was discovered that adding groves to the club face created more backspin and caused the ball to fly further.
