Golf Stuff: Tommy Fleetwood handled his heartbreaking loss at the 2025 Travelers Championship with remarkable grace and honesty. After leading through 71 holes, he missed a crucial par putt on the 18th, allowing Keegan Bradley to snatch the win. Despite the sting, Fleetwood didn’t shy away from the media. He said: “I’m upset now. I’m gutted. I’m angry. When it calms down, I’ll look at the things I did well, look at the things I can learn from”.  He also added with a touch of vulnerability: “Right now I would love to just go and sulk somewhere, and maybe I will do. But there’s just no point making it a negative for the future, really. Just take the positives and move on”.  Later, he posted a hopeful message on social media: “We’ll go again!! As always, thanks for being on the journey. See you in Scotland!” Fleetwood’s response struck a chord with fans and fellow players alike—proof that resilience and humility can shine even in defeat.

Golf Quote: “Too much ambition is a bad thing to have in a bunker.” – Bobby Jones

Golf Stuff: Grooves help create friction between the clubface and the ball, especially on shots from the rough or wet grass. This friction generates backspin, which gives you more control over the ball’s flight and how it behaves when it lands.  More spin means a higher, softer landing shot. That’s crucial when you’re trying to stick it close to the pin instead of watching your ball roll off the green.  Grooves act like channels that clear away grass, dirt, and moisture at impact. Without them, the ball could slide up the face, reducing spin and making shots unpredictable—especially in less-than-perfect conditions.  Clean, sharp grooves help deliver consistent results. Worn or dirty grooves can lead to “fliers”—those shots that unexpectedly go farther and lower due to reduced spin.

Golf Quote: “Treat your birdies like your bogeys. If you can go through a round with a level head, it makes it much easier to recover and to still salvage a good round." – Ben Hogan

Golf Stuff: Dimples on a golf ball reduce air resistance and increase lift, allowing the ball to fly farther and more accurately than a smooth ball. Here's how it works:  Reduced Drag: As a golf ball flies through the air, it pushes air molecules aside, creating a wake of turbulent air behind it. A smooth ball creates a large wake, which increases drag and slows it down. Dimples, however, create a thin layer of turbulent air that clings to the ball’s surface longer. This reduces the size of the wake and, in turn, the drag.  Increased Lift: When a golf ball spins (especially with backspin), the dimples help generate lift through the Magnus effect. The spinning motion combined with the dimpled surface causes air pressure to be lower on top of the ball and higher underneath, helping it stay in the air longer.

Golf Stuff: One of the greatest comebacks in U.S. Open history belongs to Arnold Palmer in 1960. He trailed by seven strokes going into the final round at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. Then he unleashed a blistering 65, overtaking the field and clinching the title—still the largest final-round comeback in U.S. Open history.  Another jaw-dropper? Lou Graham in 1975. He was 11 strokes behind after two rounds and tied for 27th place. But he clawed his way back with a Saturday 68 and a gritty playoff win on Monday, making it the biggest 36-hole comeback ever at the U.S. Open.

Golf Stuff: Oakmont has hosted 17 USGA championships, including 10 U.S. Opens, making it one of the most historic venues in golf.  The club has seen legendary winners like Ben Hogan (1953), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Johnny Miller (1973), Ernie Els (1994), and Dustin Johnson (2016). One of Oakmont’s most famous features is the "Church Pew" bunker, located between the third and fourth fairways. This massive bunker spans 109 yards long, 42 yards wide, and contains 550 tons of sand. The bunker was originally created in 1903, evolving over time to include 13 grass-covered "pews" that make escaping extremely difficult.  Oakmont is known for its lightning-fast greens—Sam Snead once joked that he tried to mark his ball, but his coin slid off the green.  The course has produced multiple over-par U.S. Open winners, proving its toughness.
