Day 2: Mike Clark in Thailand

Blue Canyon Lakes and a happy reunion between myself and my 14 long lost friends!

Day 2 in Thailand started off on an obviously positive note as my golf clubs and I were finally reunited last night about 11pm. No damage thank goodness and enough stickers and urgent tape strapped all over the hard case to ensure someone other than me thought this to be extremely important.

A nine o’clock pickup up this morning finds us hurling through a maze of scooters, taxis, tuk tuks ( a type of open air flashy taxi) and general cars of all types for almost an hour away to Blue Canyon golf club.

The entrance to the Thai golf clubs are pretty telling of what’s behind the fence and this place is snappy.

The LPGA is here next week and they are gearing up and doing their best to showcase the course and clubhouse. I play this course one more time before I leave this area and I’m going to make a point of allowing extra time to enjoy the club experience. The locker rooms are fit for royalty with spa, sauna, steam and all are included and expected in your day of golf. The locker room attendant was visibly disappointed that I could not take advantage due to a tight pickup time from my driver, but I still gave him a tip for a nice fresh towel.

Another great caddie today and a real sweetheart in Aroma. She was barely as tall my side saddle putter but a real go getter. These gals want you to have a good time and believe me they talk among themselves constantly.

Today I was paired with a very nice husband and wife from Russia and a banker from Switzerland. The poor caddie that had this guy really drew the short straw. He was having a bad day, and as we all know, you start trying too hard and it only gets worse. He was not the most pleasant guy, which obviously impacts the caddie. Thus I found it internally amusing when he randomly disturbed a fire ant mound and was frantically doing the happy dance trying to brush them off his legs and ankles. Bottom line is you’re on vacation… don’t be an asshole.

I played a mixture of the blue and black tees today as the fairways were firm and fast and the greens rolling a true 10. I actually made a few putts today….. which keeps me from being an asshole.

Happy to have my clubs back I’ve got a -1 in the books for the day.  Aroma was all smiles as was I !

Day 1: Mike Clark in Thailand

Today started the official Thailand tour and the course today was Loch Palm….it did not disappoint.

Let’s preface today’s action by how we got to this point.

22 hours of actual sitting on the plane not counting layovers and a delayed flight. Indestructible samsonite luggage arrives with one wheel off and replaced with a six inch hole in the bottom with what appeared to be a pair of foot joy socks peeking out and at the time of my arrival last night, my golf clubs were somewhere between Chicago and Istanbul.

I am now in Phuket, a beach town that’s a mixture of elegant hotels and condos and a lot of third world set in between them. It all works well and people are incredibly friendly.

My caddie today was Darane who has 15 years experience at this club. The caddies mean business and won’t let you touch a club not handed to you or the flagstick. She was not crazy about me not putting with the line and I did give into her a few times.

Today’s golf was played with at least a 12-15 year old rental set of Titliest API clubs of some sort with spaghetti shafts. Since all my gear is still in route I had to buy a pair of nock off Hoka shoes in the night market just to have something to play in. All in all it was a great experience.

The greens were about perfect and what appeared to be some sort of Bermuda grass, and the fairways were very tight. I sent a pic of some type of grass I’m not familiar with that is also in some fairways. It’s wide bladed and coarse. I was in a couple of bunkers but they were very playable.

I will say that it’s HOT. It’s Hot at night, it’s hot in the morning and only gets hotter during the day. There is a time for hot and wet, but not when it’s every article of clothing I’m wearing plus the golf glove and the grips. I don’t know how these gals do it all bundled up like they are but they do their job happily and with a smile.

I enclosed a pic of the scorecard she kept and the unusual scoring system she used. Hopefully tomorrow my golf equipment will finally arrive before I leave to play again.

Thanks to Jimmy Eichelberger and the apple dot he gave me, it does appear that the clubs and I are nearing a happy reunion. All in all I’m headed for a swim and then dinner.

Life doesn’t suck!

Tuesday, February 20th: Johnson Threepeats with a (-1) !!!

Notes from Hilton-Head:  This past Saturday, Sunday & Monday, Tom, Ray and Jeff Cozzo had the opportunity to play the three Palmetto Dunes courses that Mike Clark worked at during his professional golf career. We played the Arthur Hills (Par 72… Rating-Slope 71.1-124… Yards 6,122), the Robert Trent Jones (72… 70.6-132…6,141) and the George Fazio (70… 70.8-130… 6,239). These courses we all gorgeous, most with very green winter rye in the fairways & tee boxes. They had a nightmarish number of fairway & greenside traps, water hazards, OB everywhere and alligators.  Many of the greens were smallish &/or narrow with challenging undulations and pin placements being well protected by traps.  With the fairway traps and OBs, tee shots demanded a threading of the needle.  Many approach shots required long irons or fairway woods.  Course knowledge is of a premium value when playing these courses.  Although scoring was challenging, we all had a blast!  We had great weather on Saturday and Monday, but it was quite windy & cold on Sunday at RTJ.  Hilton Head is a beautiful place to visit.  We stayed at the Hilton Omni on Palmetto Dunes.
