Mike Clark in Scotland - Day 23

Sunday morning found me striking out early after a delicious specialty pancake breakfast at my B&B prepared by the owners Mandy and Stewart. They are incredibly nice folks and they are taking good care of me for sure.

The courses of the day are Moray Old and Moray New. Both courses were designed in the late 1800s and turn of the century and are situated seaside in the Town of Lossiemouth. Although only about 60 miles from my location, it’s almost a two hour drive as you just can’t get anywhere quickly here. The day starts out very windy and chilly enough for the stocking cap and a cashmere sweater under my quilted wind jacket. My caddie, a young guy named Adam, has a thin long sleeve Under Armor shirt, no jacket, his caddie bib and a baseball cap….definitely hard core.

The golf is great, with a lot of laughs at both the good and bad shots and breaks the course throws at us. By the turn, the sun is shining and I’m peeling layers despite the ever present wind. Two holes later the sun is gone and driving stinging rain is rolling in off the sea powered by 30mph wind gusts. I manage to get my rain jacket on, but the rain pants are a foregone conclusion and my slacks are quickly soaked. A couple holes later and it’s back to cloudy windy and dry.

The Old course is tough but fair, with the signature 18th playing up toward an elevated green and the majestic stone clubhouse. I manage a good 2 putt and a nice par and hastily headed back to the pro shop to collect a fresh card and to make the turn around onto the New course.

The weather holds out, other than the wind for this round. The New course is much tighter with gorse lined fairways and I found it a fun challenge. The highlight are the holes along the ocean which are as pretty as any I’ve played. Another great day in the books and relaxing drive back to my room at the Clashmore house to see what Mandy has made for desert tonight.
