So long to 2021

Thursday Dec 30 On a nice day in the 40's but with no wind nine old timers showed up to ring out the old year. Parity was the name of the game with no one more than 4 strokes away from victory in the Nassau and only 3 skins out. Team Charlie plus Ryan E eked out a victory on the front and total with Bill, Tom, and Josh winning the back in a tie breaker. The Voss clan won two of the skins with Bill winning the third. #7 was closest to the pin and Mr Hall won in a slam dunk.

Off with his head! Winter Commissioner falls down

Thursday 12/16 on a brisk sunny day 9 energetic optimistic old timers played a 2 best ball, 50% skins, and closest to the hole on 3 & 5. The teams were randam draw (my bad) and the elite team of Hall, Voss, and Coleman lapped the field. Tom got two skins and 5 others got one. Voss and Harrison got the closest to the pins. Since our Old Timers group is based on a handicap philosophy in the future we will attempt to meet one criteria: "On the 1st tee box everyone has a chance"

A full house beats all

Tuesday the 14 was a full house of 12 old timers including one on leave from constructing the border wall. The format was 2 man best ball and 50% handicaped skins. Skins were hard to get with 4 old timers getting one each. Best ball, however, was a slam dunk with the team of Loyd/Johnson winning front -3, total -5, and tying back -2. Off season commissioner Johnson promises a varied number of formats depending on # of players and welcomes suggestions(don't call me, i will call you)

Thursday, December 8, perfection on five

What a day, what a round, what a life. after 25 years of golf I have finally witnessed a hole-in-one. Dennis K Lofted a beautiful ball on number five into a white flag it landed and disappeared. On the day the team of Tom, Leroy, Rich, and Dave L swept the team game. In singles Dennis and Rich tied for the front and Tom on the back and total with Dennis second on total. After play we decided to abandon the points game for the winter and play various other games depending on the number of players.

Saturday 12/4

A blustery Saturday found 7 old timers battling for the enormous purse present in today’s golfing world. The team of Dennis K, Bill, and Jeff won handily. Jim, Charlie V, and Tom played valiantly but the lead weight provided by yours truly was too much to overcome. Seventeen guys tied on the front and DK won back and total. I would like everyone’s input on some winter formats. Several players have expressed discontent with keeping the same # all winter. Give me ideas please.

CHARLIE VOSS.....

Congrats to Charlie Voss! Yesterday he carried Jimmy E and yours truly all day long as he shot 35-38-73 to shoot his age. It took a nice little chip in for birdie on 18 to do it. Well done CV!!

RSM CLASSIC.....AGE AND ABILITY VERSUS YOUTH AND POWER

Today on another beautiful day, with once again hardly any breeze blowing, I scored for Brian Gay, age 49, OWGR #380 (380 FOR GOD;S SAKE). 5'10" AT 160 LBS. along with youthful Seamus Power, barely out of diapers and Dylan Frittelli, seasoned touring pro (top 10 finish at the November Master's last year). Not counting the 4 par threes, Brian Gay hit driver off of every tee. Power and Frittelli hit about 5 or 6 drivers, with a few fairway woods and several utility irons off the tee. Gay's driver barely kept up with their fairway woods and irons. Gay was fairly accurate with his driver, but played several shots fron the native areas, and with one exception got up and down, every time. On the back he shot a smooth little 30!! Power usually coupled with accuracy, beats the hell out of short and good feel, but Brian Gay was one stroke behind Power and beat Frittelli by 5 shots. It was an impressive day for old short guys. Way to go Brian Gay, snazzy shoes and all. Tommorrow I score for Adam Long, St Louis based pro.

RSM CLASSIC 2021 YAMAHA PRO-AM

Today I had the opportunity to walk with Tom Hoge and his three amateurs on the Seaside course at Sea Island Ga. The weather was fabulous with just a breath of wind blowing off of the sound. While waiting I walked around the practice putting green.
Patton Kizzre a local Sea Island pro.
One of the caddies using a level on the putting green.
Wait a minute....what is that guy doing??
Anybody need any Callaway stuff?
Former RSM CHAMP
Jason Day teeing off in front of our group.
Tom Hoge and his caddie Harry.
After my round I noticed this double decker Taylormade equipment trailer. Lot's of god stuff in there!! All in all a very rewarding day. Tom Hoge is an excellent example of what and how a PGA Pro should handle himself. He was constantly reading putts for his team, as well as congratulating their shots. Tom took the time to spend time with everyone in his group, even yours truly. A great day was had by everyone. On too tomorrow and the beginning of the tournament.

REALITY ON THE PGA TOUR

Most everyone thinks the the players on the PGA TOUR have it made. Big dollar sponsorships, free this, free that, free Green Egg BBQ grills (yes, that's true). Free luxury courtesy cars and delicious free meals at the hosting club. All you have to do is finish in the top 125 every year. But what about the other 300 plus players trying to get a chance for all of this. Monday qualifiers.....Every Monday before the weekly tour event up to 150 Pros tee it up for 4 spots to play in that weeks event. Half of those 150, had to Pre-qualify just to get into the Monday qualifier. Jeez Louise! Today I had the chance to walk 18 holes with two different threesomes at Brunswick CC. A Donald Ross design that was recently brought back to what Donald intended in 1920 something. Think about playing 18 holes with every green like our 8th hole...with super fast greens and hole locations like we play on 16 everyday. Tough, tough, tough. Consider designing a course using only animals to pull the plows. No large earth movers back then. Consider clubs with wooden shafts and leather grips as tools the players had to tackle the courses. Some of you Old Timers reading this...used those clubs in your early golf careers. 150 young studs and many seasoned Pga veterans showed up today to play for 4 spots. Past Pga tour winners who lost their status. Pga veterans outside the top 125. Aspiring young kids, too. Tommy "two gloves" Gainey, was -1 before I joined him and Sam Saunders (yes, Arnies grandson) who was even. Both shot +5 on the back making them to decide what to do next year, as this is the final stop until 2022. Frank lickliter, Bo Hoag, DJ Trahan, Spencer Levin, Beau Hossler a fairly recent grad who has fallen on tough times. I could list 20 more veterans that showed up without a courtesy car...no snacks and fruit on the tee. No Gatorade in the coolers...just plain old water. No free buffet in the clubhouse. Just 150 excellent golfers of all ages just trying to get a chance to become a part of the top 125..Thanks for showing up today fellas... Enjoy the RSM Classic this week on the Golf Channel. I'll be the guy wearing the pink mirror glasses.

Pink Bird

While kayaking in the marsh today, I came across the below interesting Pink Bird. I've never seen one with this coloring before. Unlike most wildlife near the water, this bird didn't fly away when I got close to it. Enjoy.

JEKYLL ISLAND

Lynne and I traveled to Jekyll Island yesterday to play the Pine Lakes golf course. It was a beautiful day for golf and we had the opportunity to see plenty of wild life and a few really large alligators. The birds were sunning by the 18th tee. Notice their large curved beaks, Truly ugly ugly birds. The gator was also sunning by a pond about 50 feet from the 5th tee box. Lynne was not happy with me stopping to take the picture at all. Stealing from the "bear" joke...I told her that I wasn't afraid of the gator...as I believed that I could outrun her if need be. Take care all.

THE OLD TIMER'S ACTIVE POIN T SEASON IS OVER

The Acting Commish has declared that the active point season is over for the winter. If you continue to play in the game Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, your points will remain the same until next spring. Continue to play youe same set of tees as you have up until now. If you for some reason you play another set of tees this winter, please adjust your required points up or down as shown on the scorecard. It was a great season for the Old Timer's. Our gae is as fair a game of golfas any handicap contest. Many thanks to Dave Dister for compiling our points list. It is not a simple effort on his part. Also many thanks to each of you who have assisted in the after play scoring and money distribution. Have a great winter and holiday season. Charlie out!

JUST WHEN YOU THINK THE GREENS COULDN'T GET ANY FASTER AND THE HOLE LOCATIONS ANY HARDER

Ed, if you by any chance are reading this we love quick greens and some challenging hole locations, but today was PGA/LPGA material. Top dressing and then rolling mid round made things really tough, not that the Old Timers aren't tough guys, but come on man! ease up a little. The course is in excellent condition, with the leaves changing FCCC is a gem right now. 11 old timer's showed up today and one team battled the conditions better than the rest. Dave A, Tom and Charlie J with even, even, even, win everything today. Dave A takes the front +2, Charlie V takes 2nd and six of you tied for 3rd. Yours truly completes all three Charlie's taking home a little cash from the pot today, with a +3 on the back. Tom, Charlie's Vand J tie 2nd with +1. Charlie V takes total, +2. Charlie J 2nd +1. Too bad if your name wasn't Charlie today. It looks like Thursday is a rainout, so see you all Saturday at 11:00. Charlie Voss +1 to 30. Dave Dister -1 to 29. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 31 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 26 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

IT STARTED OUT CLOUDY AND DRY, WE GOT A LITTLE WET, IT ENDED UP JUST FINE

Golf today was again challenging, we had a little rain for the front nine, and again really tough hole locations. One group stood up and took control of the situation. Team Terry, Dean, Dennis K, plus yours truly won the front, back and total with scores of +3, +8 +11. Surprisingly, the winner from the front didn't come from this team. Charlie V with a nice even par on the front +4, takes individual. Tom, Dave D and Dennis tie for 2nd. On the back the winning team also claimed most of the individual money. Yours truly with +4, Dennis with +3, and Dean with +1, (Jim ties for 3rd ) take the back. Dennis +5 wins total while team Charlie V and C tie for 2nd total. A rare occurrence happened today...everyone on the winning team today was even or positive for the entire day, considering the challenging cnditions. Well done!!\\ Today I did the quotas before I had my "toddies". Leroy Eggert -1 to 30. Bill Hall -1 to 31. Paul Nealis -1 to 25. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 31 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 26 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 29 * Voss, D. 33 *

UPDATED POINT TOTALS

Dave Aholt -1 to 30. Charlie Johnson -1 to 31. Charlie Voss -1 to 29. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 26 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 29 * Voss, D. 33 *

IT WAS CHILLY, IT WAS WINDY, THE LEAVES ARE EVERYWHERE, AND THE HOLE LOCATIONS ARE GETTING HARDER

It's no wonder with the conditions out there none of the Old Timers was positive for the day. Just when you think that the hole locations can't get any more difficult...they do! Twelve of us struggled to get the ball in the hole all day long. Once again it was four teams of three, which is a great game. The front was a little easier to score on as two teams managed to be +2. Charlie V , Jim, and Lroy tied with Dave D, Dennis K, and yours truly. The back was really ugly....reminds me of a little ditty we used to sing.....U G L Y you ain't got no alibi you Ugly!! you Ugly! Dave D, Dennis and yours truly wins the back -7 and also total -5. Individual scoring was not pretty either....Jim ( a baby Old Timer) was even for the day and took total. Pretty decent round. Dave D, Rich, and Tom tie the front with +2. Bob, Jim and Charlie C tie the back -1. Dennis is 2nd on the back as Dave D and Charlie C tie for 3rd. It was made official yesterday...the leaf rule is in effect until further notice. Again, to receive relief from a ball not found in a leafy area, it must be assumed that the ball would have been found if not for the leaves. Balls in the woods, near a hazard or the water probably will receive no relief. Before ending todays blog, I want to address my "eye" comments from Tuesday. It appears that my attempt at humor missed the mark and came off as a little offensive or defensive (depending on your side of the story). Enough said. See you all Saturday.

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY...EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SOME DIABOLIC HOLE LOCATIONS

I have one simple thought.....if you don't like my temporary eye condition....you don't have to look at it. For the record I was helping a teammate locate his errant shot. As they say...no good deed goes unpunished. Another thought...instead of me wearing an eye patch...you could wear two of them...problem solved. Today was a fabulous weather day, the course is as good as we can expect. The hole locations were extremely tough..I did see Ed playing this evening...at least he gets to experience what we do. Today 12 of us played as four threesomes...which is a fabulous game. Team Charlie V and C, along with Mac won the front...Oh wait our accountant pointed out that his team.. Terry, Lroy, and Charlie J actually won with +2. Bob, Bill and Rich take the back +1, while two teams tied for total -3. You know who you are. Charlie C wins the front +4, Charlie J 2nd +2, Charlie V and Terry tie 3rd. All three Charlie's cashed in on the front. Rich and Dave D tie on the back with +2. Bob and Dennis K tie for 3rd. Dave D with the only positive front and back takes total +3. Rich is 2nd +2 and Charlie's Vand J tying for 3rd. Not bad golf today for really challenging conditions. Mack Miller -1 to 24. Aholt 31 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 32 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 26 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

MY GOLF SPY STUDIES THE PRO V1

PLAYING GOLF YESTERDAY WAS BETTER THAN A STICK IN YOUR EYE (MINE ACTUALLY)!!!

Beautiful day yesterday as 11 Old Timer's took to the course. Lot's of good golfing your ball, as 9 of the 11 were positive or even for the day. Let's start today reporting the individual results.....Rich +4 wins the front, with Jeff K and Bob coming in 2nd with +3 each. Steady play saw Bob winning the back and total at +3, +6. Excellent play yesterday Bob!! A nice little 67. Bill is 2nd on the back +2, with two of you tying for 3rd. With a pair of +3's (Dave I apologize for interrupting you multiple times during your announcement of the scores) Jeff and Bill tie 2nd total. Rich and Jeff led Leroy and yours truly to a victory on the front with a fine +8 total. As might be expected Bob led a strong team (Dave D, Bill, and Tom) to victory on the back and total +4, +9. Team Charlie (V and J) along with Dennis K.....thanks for coming. Only one change. Dennis Kossmann drops 1 to 26. Aholt 31 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 32 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 26 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL FALL DAY FOR OLD TIMER'S TO GOLF THEIR BALL

The greens are recovering nicely from aerification, some are really soft and some are really firm, and some are just right. But they could be a little quicker...I'm just say'in. Only 2 of the 11 Old Timer's were positive today, and both they and their teams won money todat. Charlie J led Rich and Dennis K to victories on the back and total..+2, -2. Tom led his team, Ryan, Dave A, and Bill to a victory on the front +1. Tom won the front +5, tied for 2nd on the back and won total +6. 3 tied for 2nd on the front. Rich turned around his -4 on the front to win the back with +2. Charlie's J ad C take 2nd and 3rd respectfully for total. There will not be a Saturday game due to the Hummingbird Tourney. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 24. Bob Coleman -1 to 34. Aholt 31 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 34 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 32 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

BEAUTIFUL WINDY DAY FOR OLD TIMER'S

The temperature was great for fall golf, off of the paths, and most of the rough saw the rough mower at least come close to each hole. The greens are getting better and rolling much better. Only three of us managed to be positive for the day, while the remaining 7 struggled a bit. Charlie V, Dennis and Dave A win the front and total, +3, +1. Bob, Terry and Rich win the back at -1. Dennis wins the front +3, with Dave A taking 2nd +2, and tying for 1st total with Terry +4. Terry wins the back +3, and Dave A taking 2nd +2. Too many ties for third too mention names...play a little better to get your name in the blog...For the record Dave A gains 1 to 31...I was just a little premature..... Dave Aholt +1 to 31. Charlie Curtis -1 to 30. Terry Moosmann +1 to 30. Aholt 31 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 30 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 32 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

A STORY WITH A MORAL.......

In 1923, Who Was: 1. President of the largest steel company? 2. President of the largest gas company? 3. President of the New York Stock Exchange? 4. Greatest wheat speculator 5. President of the Bank of International Settlement? 6. Great Bear of Wall Street? These men were considered some of the world’s most successful of their days. Now, 98 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them. The Answers: 1. The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab, died a pauper. 2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane 3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home. 4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless. 5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself. 6. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide. However: in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was Gene Sarazen. What became of him? He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death. The Moral: Screw work. Play golf.

PUTTING SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE THIS CHALLENGING

From many personal experiences, we all know that aerifying our greens is crucial to keeping them healthy. Instead of punching them once in the fall...you punch them three times....will they be three times as healthy??? We can only hope so. The old adage fits well here....if you wish in one hand and shit in the other......which one fills up faster?? Normal golf maintenance practices call for preparing the course for play early in the day so that everything is ready for your entire 18 holes. I.E. each green is mowed, rolled etc for your round. Yesterday was quite the roller coaster on our greens. In addition to aeration, with some greens having more or less top dressing than the others...we decided it was a great idea to mow some of the greens mid afternoon, then roll some of the greens as well. With the exception of you few Old Timers that have putting challenges on a regular basis.....it was certainly a challenging day trying to figure out the greens. Those who did so, we congratulate you. Enough of my rambling....and I am not under the influence of any alcholic fluids. Now back to yesterday's results. Before that, I must digress...one of our fellow Old Timer's suggested the my earlier posting of the female tennis player was actually a male tennis player. Please scroll down and closely examine the picture and decide for yourself.. 12 of us showed up yesterday, with only two of you being positive for the day, meaning 10 of us were not. Dave D, and Dennis K led Mike and Tom to victories on the front +3, and total -1. Charlies V and J, Rich and Dave A won the back +1. Dennis wins the front +4 and takes 2nd total +1. Bob is 2nd on the front +3, Bill and Rich tie 3rd. Charlie V, Dave A, and Ton all tie on the back +1. With his continued steady play Dave D wins total +2. Tom Dunlavy -1 to 23. Terry Moosmann -1 to 29. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 31 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 32 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 29 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

NO MATTER WHERE YOU TEE THE BALL UP......65 IS A FREAKING GOOD SCORE!!!

We jokingly say that someone is on fire during the round after having a few good holes...but Bob was blazing away all day. A spectacular round including a hole out from 16's fairway bunker for a duece!! All told Bob was +8 for the day, which for you who are needing help with the math is 42 points. Certainly one of the highest point totals for our little group of Old Timers. Bob, Dave A, Dennis K, and Mac win the front +6, and total +7. Rich, and Charlie's Z and C squeak out the back at +2. As good as Bob's day was he didn't sweep the individual. Dennis H won the front with +4. Bob takes 2nd, +3. Bob wins the back and total +5, +8. Three of you tied for 3rd on the front, and three for 2nd on the back. Dennis K takes 2nd total with +4. 9 of the 11 Old Timers were positive or even for the day. Don't forget that golf Saturday will start a little later due to the Battle of Krakow Ridge. Bob Coleman's amazing 42 point day elevates his quota to 35. Congrats, Bob, on your terrific rounds. 6 SHOWED UP....ONLY 3 WENT HOME HAPPY

Charlie V and Tom pushed Bob across the finish line in first place. With totals of +4, -3, and +1 they swept all three sides today. Tom gets 1st, 2nd 2nd, and Chas V gets 2nd, 1st 1st. Bill with -1 ties 2nd on the back. I had the opportunity to take a cart out (along with a tall whiskey and water) and tour the Donald Ross course at Boyne Highlands. What a beautiful layout in way up north Michigan. Some of the greenest grass I have ever seen. Pretty special place. See you all Thursday at noon.

SATURDAY IN THE PARK

A small group showed up today and enjoyed a pleasant round. The new cart path on 18 is surely a welcome addition to the course. I for one was plenty tired of the old bumpy ass path. Terry continues his stellar play leading his team consisting of Dennis K, and Charlies V and C to a complete sweep with +6, +2, +8. He also swept the individual with +6, +3, +9. Bill takes 2nd on the front and total with +3, +3. 4 of the remaining 6 tied for 2nd on the back bringing home .25 each. Not sure exactly what you can buy with .25 these days?? changes to the quotas will be reported later. See you all Thursday.

THURSDAY OLD TIMER RESULTS

Yesterday saw 13 of us take to the course on a beautiful sunny day. It is really nice to see improvements being made to our course without fretting over how we are going to pay for it, or that we're adding to our debt as some of us are very debt conscious. Yeah I know borrowing money today is almost free...almost. On to golf....I have written many many times about how a single teammate has single handley drug their team to victory with their stellar play. Some times the opposite happens...one teammate is so bad...that they alone snatch victory from the hands of their team. Yesterday it happened to two of the four teams. Other than yours truly who's putting woes destroyed any chance for his team of winning, the other Old Timer will remain nameless (his score -11! will be revealed). Ray led his team of FIL (Tom), Dave A and Mr -11 to a win on the front +3. Mike, Terry and Charlie J win the back and total with -2, -1. Ray, Tom and Charlie V (9 straight pars on the back!!) each won a share of the individual game on the front, back and total. Both Ray and Charlie were +5 on the day, nice going. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 24. Charlie Voss +1 to 30. Bill Hall -1 to 32. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 31 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 24 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 28 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

AS OLD TIMER'S BATTLE THE HEAT...ONE STANDS ABOVE ALL

Yesterday was once again an example of a winning outcome determined by the luck of the draw. Unemcumbered by tax customers and the pesky IRS, Terry had an excellent day and drug his teammates Charlie's J and V, along with Dave A to a victory on the back and total, +3, +4. Terry also swept the individual with impressive scores of +5, +4, +9. Bill is 2nd on the front +4, and drags his team to a victory on the front +3. He takes 2nd total wih +3. Bill Hall +1 to 33. Terry Moosmann +1 to 28. Charlie Voss -1 to 29. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 31 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 33 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 28 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 29 * Voss, D. 33 *

saturday's results

This is the Acting Commish putting keystroke to pixel. I would like to congratulate our blogger on his remembrance of the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago. Well-crafted and heartfelt. I am sure every Oldtimer shares in his sentiment. He mentioned the Amex at Bellerive being cancelled and that Tiger had to drive back to Lake Nona. His passenger on that trip was his manager. And they created the groundwork on what was to become the Tiger Woods Foundation on that trip. It is one of the very few "Foundations" that has been successful to its vision. The TGF has done a world of good. Today, five stalwarts made it to the first tee. That in itself should tell you it wasn't an official game, but we played the quota game nonetheless. The twosome of Terry M. and Dave D. won all three legs ... +5, +1, +6. And that score was entirely the contribution of Terry M. and his brand new Calamity Jane ... his Odyssey putter. He shot 34/39/73 on a very windy day. That gave him +7 on the day. He individually beat the team of C. Voss, Hall and Eggert ... and his own teammate of course ... on front and total with +6, +7 and tied C. Voss for first and second on the back at +1. Well done, Terry. The Acting Commish has made a decision on how to play a change made to the course recently. There are several new collection basins (small ponds) strategically placed to help with drainage. The basin short and right of #12 green could cause a problem. It's bone dry most of the time ... maybe 4 or 5 feet deep and definitely in bounds. There is a large, metal drain placed in the center of it at its deepest point. Should a ball find its way into that basin it will rest against the man-made drain. That's why the Oldtimers will play those basins as ground-under-repair and take a free drop, no-closer to the hole. This rule will remain in effect until further notice. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 31 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 27 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

20 YEARS AGO TODAY

20 years ago something great was happening in St Louis in the professional and amateur golf circles. At the same time Bellerive cc was hosting the amex championship, while norwood hills cc was hosting the finals of the US senior amateur championship. It is unusual for our city to hold one golf championship, but two at the same time was incredible, especially if you love watching golf live in person. Too say that I was excited to spectate at both events is an understatement. But a small group of well trained and organized terriorists had made plans to ruin my weekend of watching my beloved game of golf. Life in America tragically changed in one single day. Thousands of loved ones were taken from their families. The PGA cancelled the Amex at Bellerive, but the USGA had not made a decision on the play at Norwood, as only a few players remaind in match play. My memory wants to tell me it was down to the final 8. So I made the drive out to Norwood Hills CC...driving up the winding road to the club house was strange, I could see a few players and a handful of spectators on the back nine, but it was as if nothing was happening at the club. It turned out that the USGA had made the decision not to stop play or even tell the few players and caddies on course that the attcks on America had happened. The large patio serving as scoring and hospitality was completely empty. Everyone not on the course was inside the dining room watching the horrific acts replayed over and over again on televisions placed throughout. I have no further memory of what decision was made regarding the final matches. One story I do remember is of Tiger renting a car and driving home to Lake Nona, as all airlines had cancelled every flight. It is only fitting that 20 years later St Louis and Norwood Hills CC get the opportunity to showcase the city we call home. While Norwood CC looks good, I think our little Country Club looks a little better. Of course we don't have the blimp flying over our negative areas. So as you spend a little time this afternoon watching the Seniors play at Norwood Hills....Please take a few minutes to reflect on our great country and all that we have to be greatful far. Remember that Freedom isn't Free.

THURSDAYS BUMPY RIDE

The weather was perfect. The greens weren't. They've been aerated and top dressed (I'm sure that procedure was needed.) However, they were being cut and rolled as we played and that procedure didn't start at 18 and work backward. It was haphazard So ... some were a lot faster than others. That may have been the "root cause" as to why 6 of the 10 players turned in negative quotas. The results: The team of Kossman, Johnson, Purschke and Dister won the front ... +3 ... and total ... +3. The team of Coleman, Harrison and Voss won the back at +1. Individually, Dister wins the front, back and total ... +3,+3,+6. Johnson and Purschke tie for 2nd and 3rd on the front at +2. C. Voss wins 2nd on the back at +2. Hall and Coleman tie for third at +1. Johnson's +2 takes 2nd total and Hall and Purschke tie for 3rd at +1.

BELLERIVE CC PRACTICE OF KEEPING ZOYSIA ALIVE WHILE WAITING TO REUSE IT

ndent Bellerive Country Club We Grow Our Best Zoysia on Pavement It has become a running joke among the Bellerive agronomy team that we grow our best zoysia grass sod in our parking lot. Whenever we have leftover sod pieces from a sodding project out on the golf course, we lay out the excess pieces in the parking lot of our ground maintenance facility until a new location to lay the sod on the course can be identified and prepped. As crazy as it seems, an asphalt parking lot does have its pros as a growing environment. It’s a constant warm environment which zoysia enjoys being a warm season turf species, the turfgrass isn’t subjected to the stresses of being mowed or run over by golf carts, and it has a readily available supply of water being situated next to our equipment wash station. No superintendent enjoys sodding zoysia grass, sodding tall fescue is much easier by comparison. If fescue is kept hydrated it will blend into the existing turf in a matter of weeks to months. Zoysia is a multi-year commitment as it can take up to three years for zoysia sod to completely blend into the existing turf. A superintendent once said that in year one zoysia sod sleeps, year two it creeps, and year three it leaps. Zoysia grass already has a slow growth and recovery rate compared to other turfgrass species such as bermudagrass, but that slow growth rate is even slower in freshly sodded zoysia which takes a few years to get going. Being a warm season turfgrass species that goes dormant in the colder months zoysia’s slow growth rate is hampered even further by only having an active growing season in our climate from April-May through September-October. This is why divots on a tee box take an exceedingly long time to heal over and golf cart traffic on fairways is often restricted over the winter months as it would cause damage to the plant that cannot be seen until it exits dormancy in the spring. Zoysia typically has a mowing height of 0.500-0.600” which requires zoysia sod to match up perfectly with the existing turf, as mowers would scalp if the transition between sod and existing turf wasn’t perfect due to the low height of cut. To help alleviate this problem it is preferred to walk mow zoysia sod for its first season as a walk mower reduces the risk of scalping and is easier on the plant. With all of these factors stacked against it maybe there’s some truth to our running joke about growing our best zoysia on pavement.

TODAY BROUGHT OUT QUITE A FEW OLD TIMERS...WITH VERY GOOD RESULTS

First off let me say that it was really nice to join the group again today....it has been a long time since I have been able to enjoy your company for a round of golf. Now, on to the words...and it looks like quite a few of them...................... from the Acting Commish..............First, let's take care of business. We have a quota-game tee-time this Saturday, the 4th at 11. Bill Hall has a skins game tee time on both Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th at 8 a.m. There will be no quota game on Tuesday the 7th because the course will be closed. The quota game will resume AT 11 A.M. THURSDAY THE 9TH BECAUSE YET ANOTHER OUTSIDE EVENT HAS OUR NOON TEE TIME. Apparently other holes will be closed to install drainage in the near future. Your quota will be decreased by a minimum of one and a maximum of two quota points based on your quota on that particular nine holes. If your quota is 13 or lower for that nine, your quota for that nine will be reduced by 1 point. If your quota is 14 or higher for that nine, your quota will be reduced by 2 points. It has been agreed on by the committee that the reduction of your quota should be based on what 1/9th of your quota is. Today's weather can only be described as splendid. Some of the pin placements were questionable, but as the Bard once said, "We all had to play them!" Fifteen players started and all who were plus on the day got money back. On the front, led by Jeff Fortner's +6, his teammates; Bob C., Jeff K. and Charlie J. prevailed at a remarkable +9. The back and total were taken by Dennis K., Dave A. and Dave D. at +4/+7. Dennis (The Menace) Kossmann did something this reporter has never seen in his 35 years prowling the links of FC ... he was 2-under on the par 3s WITH A DOUBLE BOGEY ON 5. 4 birds and a double and that's why he's THE MENACE!! Individually, Fortner takes the front at +6, Eggert takes the back at +5 and they split first and second on total at +7. Second and third on the front was a 4-way tie from Aholt, Coleman, Voss and Eggert at +2. Second and third on the back were tied by Kossmann and Morris at +2. And third on total was tied by Aholt, Voss and Kossmann at +3. Eggert +1 to 31. Fortner +1 to 28. Purschke -1 to 21. Curtis -1 to 31. Harrison -1 to 24. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 34 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 31 * Dister 30 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 27 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 27 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 21 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

PATRICK CANTLAY'S PUTTER CHANGE

“Historically a blade putter user, Cantlay has been in a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 tour prototype since April’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The five-time PGA TOUR winner was seeking a putter more conducive to a straight back-straight through stroke. In June, Cantlay won the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday with the mid-mallet X 5 pictured below. It featured a double-bend shaft and no sight-line.” “However, Cantlay switched to a Phantom X5 with a sight line following the second round of last week’s THE NORTHERN TRUST. He also began drawing a line on his Titleist Pro V1x golf ball to help his alignment on short putts.” IMO...If it is good enough for a person that made 33 feet of putts during his 6 hole playoff with BROOKSY...it might be beneficial to almost everyone. Thanks, and keep breathing

TUESDAY RESULTS FROM THE ACTING COMMISH

It was really a beautiful day for golf! Only 8 played, but they were treated to a delightful 17 holes. (12 was closed. Installing drainage.) And because we didn't have to play 12, 5 of the 8 players will see an increase in their quotas. The team of Clark, Aholt, Moosmann and Kossmann won the front comfortably ... +5 to -1 over the team of Hall, Coleman, Voss and Dister. However, the also-rans on the front chalked up a tidy little +6 to +2 on the back. That means that team Clark won total +7 to +5. Individually, Terry wins the star of the day. He won the front and total at +3, +5 and tied the back at +2 with Hall and Aholt. A 4-way tie for second on the front by Voss, Coleman, Clark and Aholt won them each a quarter. Lots of smirking, but the Commish feels if you win it ... you get it. Dister won the back at +4 and came in 2nd total at the same number. Dister +1 to 30. Aholt +1 to 30. Hall +1 to 32. Moosmann +1 to 27. Clark +1 to 34. IT WAS A TALE OF TWO TEAMS

Reporting in from Boulder Junction (no...not Petticoat Junction) Wisconsin, with temperatures in the mid 70's......It was almost Goldlilocks golf yesterday, as one team was too hot...and the other team was too cold. Dave Aholt swept the individual with a nice little 70...+5, +3, +8. His team of Bob, Tim, and Terry also swept the team game..+8, +1, +9. The other Dave, D took second on the front +3, with Terry being 2nd on the back +1, and tying 2nd total with the acting commish, +2. I'm hoping to play a little golf myself the next few days and catch a few fish...maybe the ellusive Muskie!! Stay Cool. Aholt +1 to 30. Hall -1 to 31. Moosmann +1 to 26. Aholt 30 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 33 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 31 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 26 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

FROM THE MOUTH OF THE ACTING COMMISH

THERE'S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN Mike Clark's natural 68 (+2, +4, +6) leads his team of Dunlavy and Dister to a clean sweep (+3, +3, +6) with the only positive team scores of the day. Individually, Dister takes the front at +3, Clark is second at +2 and Coleman, Sharma and Aholt tie for third at Even. Clark's +4 on the back (a natural 33) easily wins first with Dunlavy and Hall tied at 2nd and 3rd at +1. Clark wins total and Dister finishes 2nd at +1. Hall and Coleman tie for third at even. By the way, Hall eagles the 18th to get to even on the back and I'm here to tell you the pin placement on that hole was as close to a joke as we've seen all year. All the way back left. Hall's ball trickled into the hole, but if it had missed, it would've gone off the green and down the hill. Leroy Eggert drops 1 to 30. The only change of the day. Aholt 29 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 33 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 32 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 25 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

BILL HALL.....ONCE AGAIN LEADS HIS TEAM TO A COMPLETE SWEEP

It was one of the most impressive team performances of the year...Bill Hall, Charlie's Voss and Johnson each played well as their team swept the front, +8, back +8, and total +16. Each teams total score was positive for the day. Tuesday saw 8 of 10 Old Timers post positive results. Bill continues his stellar play winning all three ways with +5, +4, +9 for a 40 point day which equates to a smooth 67. Well done. Bob +4, 2nd on the front (32 by the way). Dave D had another solid day taking 3rd on the front, +3, 2nd back and total, +3, +6. Mac +3 tied 2nd on the back. Charlie J with +4 takes 3rd total. Bill Hall +1 to 32. Mac Miller +1 to 25. ANOTHER GUEST APPEARANCE FROM THE ACTING COMMISH

BARKIES ABOUND!!! The golf course sounded like a shooting range! The crack, crack, crack of ball after ball hitting tree after tree continually rang out. There were 9 players today. On the 15th hole alone, my three-player team team hit 5 trees and accumulated a grand total of -1 points. This reporter witnessed Tom Dunalvy hitting three, separate trees ... and a bush .... with his tee ball on #18!!! As my team was moving down the 16th fairway, a twosome of young men (not affiliated with The Oldtimers) both hit a tree with their tee balls on #15. Not possible you say? I saw it with my own eyes. Matching toe shots from the blue tee!!! The way my team was playing ... and the tortoise-like pace-of-play ... something had to keep me involved other than the hideousness of my own golf. The team of C. Voss, Sharma and Dunlavy won the front at +2 and tied the total at -5. They tied with the team of Hall, Moosmann and Dennis Kossmann (welcome back, Dennis) who also took the back at -2. Dunlavy won the Front Individual with the best nine holes of any player ... +2. Second and third were split at even by Voss, Sharma and Kossmann. Bill Hall won the back with the only other plus score of the day .... +1 ... and Voss, Eichelberger and Kossmann split 2nd and third with -1. Hall wins total at Even and Voss, Dunlavy and Kossmann split 2nd and third at -1. Harrison and Dister leave the field ... penniless!! No changes in any quota. Aholt 29 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 33 * Coleman 35 * Cozzo 26 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 31 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Lee 36 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 25 * Morris 24 * Nealis 26 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 31 * Thater 27 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 30 * Voss, D. 33 *

THE LATEST COMMENTARY FROM THE ACTING COMMISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WILD BILL HALL BLISTERS THE 11-MAN-FIELD ON A SCORCHER OF A DAY. Bill's 1-under, 1-under 69 translated into a +4, +4, +8 day. He easily won all three legs of the individual and dragged his teammates, Voss and Eichelberger ... kicking and screaming ... over the finish line to win the back nine at +1. The steady play of Harrison, Moosmann, Eggert and Dister took the front at +6 and total at +5. Denny Harrison was the lone standout on the back for that team at +3 giving him 2nd on the back and 2nd on total at +5. He and partner Leroy split 2nd and third on the front at +2, Tom Dunlavy took third on the back at +1. And Clark, Eggert and Dister split 3rd on total. Aholt drops 1 to 29. Hall goes +1 to 31. Harrison also jumps up 1 to 25. Eggert gains a point to 31. Purschke loses 1 to 22. THE MOOSE WAS LOOSE!!!!!...........................................................LIVE COMMENTARY BY THE ACTING COMMISH

THE MOOSE WAS LOOSE!! And he tore through the 9-man field with ease!! Terry Moosmann had quite a day to say the very least. The 25-quota-competitor was +9 on the day. Plus 5 on the front. Plus 4 on the back. In so doing, he led his team of Aholt and Dister to a clean sweep on the day. Plus 3 on the front. Plus 6 on the back. Plus 9 total. DD got a distant second with +1 on the front, +2 on the back, +3 total. Third individual was a 4-way tie on the front shared by BC/CV/TD/MM at even. Third on the back and total was shared by BC and MM at +1. Aholt +1 to 30. Coleman +1 to 35. SATURDAY AS VIEWED FROM THE EYES OF THE ACTING COMMISH

Without further ado I bring you the Acting Commish................................................................................................ IT WAS A RAY KINDA DAY ... (With a big dash of Tim thrown in!) Does anybody but me remember a ridiculous TV game show from decades ago called The Gong Show? Chuck Barris was the contentious host, and one of his competing regulars was a comedian who wore a paper bag over his head while he was doing his act. His name? The Unknown Comic! Well imagine Hall, Harrison, Moosmann and Dister with bags over their heads today. The Unknown Oldtimers! The team of Sharma, Morris, Dunlavy and Purschke swept the day, leaving the Unknowns licking their wounds ... +9, even and +9. Individually, Tim's +7 was good enough to take the front with Ray's +5 coming in second. On the back, Ray threw Dave D. a little crumb and allowed a +2 tie for first and second. That gave Ray an easy total at +7 ... a natural 1-under round ... and he didn't even stick around to pick up the spoils, leaving that task to Grampa Tom. Ray goes +1 to 31 and Tim goes +1 to 24. SOME SIZZLING GOLF THURSDAY

38...37...and 36! Yesterday saw some excellent golfing of the little white (or yellow) ball. We'll start with the individual portion today as several good rounds were played yesterday. Aided by an ace on the 11th hole, Dave D easily wins the back with +6 (again a little 34 if you are paying attention). Charlie J and Mike (35) tie for 2nd with +2. Dave also takes total honors with a mighty good +9 on the day. Excellent scoring yesterday Dave!! Bob takes 2nd +5 (38 points and 69 for the day). Mike with +3 is 3rd (even par day). That was a great display of golf!!! Dave and Mike, along with Charlie V (who was the beneficiary of a lucky draw) swept the team game +3, +4,+7. The Acting Commish aced the 11th today, helping his team sweep the three-team field. His sudden and unexpected attach of coordination resulted in an even-par round. Dave Dister +1 to 29. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!

Now that I have your attention. Saturday saw a small group of Old Timer's take to the course. Another complete sweep was made by Dave D, Leroy, Rich, and newcomer Jeff Thater, +5, +2, and +7. Individual honors goes to Rich +3 on the front, Dennis +2 on the back and Rich again for total with +4. Too many ties too mention everyone splitting a dollar. The Acting Commish reported in that newby Jeff eagled #16 from 93 yards. Excellent result...as I don't know if it was a good shot. The weather was spectacular ... the carts were off the path ... we welcomed a new member, Jeff Thater, but still only fielded 7 players. Bill Hall +1 to 30. Leroy Eggert +1 to 31. Jeff Thater +1 to 27. OLD TIMER'S RIDE THE PATHS TO VICTORY

Seven Old Timer's took to the cart paths yesterday with some not so stellar results. Bill posted a +2 and Bob managed +1 on the front. All other scores were even at best. Bill, Dave D, and Leroy won the front and total, tying the back. Leroy and Mike posted a pair of evens to win something, along with Bob who ended the day even. Charlie J reported in that a couple of additional wagers were added to the days play. A random pick after play identified a skin opportunity on the front and back, as well as a grennie opportunity on one of the five par threes. Bill wins the skin on the front, Mike on the back, and Leroy the greenie on 7. Now we will have a guest commentary from the Acting Commish................................... AND FOR 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS THEY RODE THE CART PATHS WHILE ALL AROUND THEM WERE RIDING THE TURF!!! NEWS ALERT 1: We have it on good authority that the, "Emergency board meeting outcome was a decision to table hole #18 renovations at this time." NEWS ALERT 2: Don't forget, there will not be a game this coming Tuesday, July 6. The course is closed 'til 2 at which time it will open for the Ladies League. See you Saturday, the 3rd. The Acting Commish had the honor of being partnered with Leroy Eggert today. Sadly, Leroy hit his drive into the lake on #10. One in ... two out. With horror and astonishment he rinsed his 3rd shot as well. Three in ... four out. With 160+ yards left to the green, he pushed his 5th into the woods. A magnificent punch almost holed out his sixth. "If you sink this for double, I will write this up for the blog," said the AC. He snaked in his 15-foot-7th for a double in an unbelievable display of "never-giving-up." Leroy's team went on to tie the back as a result of his Herculean efforts. Hall was even heard to say, "You're my horse if you never win a race!" Dister loses 1 to 28. It was a small showing, but Charlie V continued his solid play and led his team of Tom and Bill to victories on the front, +4 and total, -4. WEATHER OR NOT.....THE GAME MUST GO ON

Today's blog is courtesy of our Acting Commish...........................................................................................Three threesomes teed off and then the horn blew when the lead group was on #4. The Acting Commish thought all returned to the safety of the clubhouse ... but alas ... two of his teammates left the premises without so much as a "fare thee well!" Could they have left him because he had 9 putts after the first three holes? We'll never know. One contender ... a Mr. Coleman ... left his team in much the same manner ... and he had a par, eagle and birdie for his first three holes ... 10 points and he walked. Is he nuts???? At any rate, the acting commish took his place, the third team remained intact, and the stalwart 6 forged ahead with their first three holes in the books. It turned out to be a nice day. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 23. CLUBHOUSE RENOVATION ASSESSMENT VOTE FAILS!!!

Good news travels fast!!! I have it on good authority that the assessment vote failed 127 to 117. A slim margin indeed, but as I refresh my VO and water, I toast Jim E for his huge effort in getting the message out to the membership explaining why a no vote was the only vote. Well done Jimmy!!!!! Here's to improving our golf course and not the clubhouse.

SOME DAYS IT JUST AIN'T RIGHT .....(CORRECTION...)

A mathmetical miscalculation last night caused me to incorrectly calculate Charlie V's front nine score. He actually shot an even par 35 and not a 33. Still...it was a great nine holes. So apologies too all for my mini-rant last night. It might have been some bad VO that caused the problem. Before lavishing praise on Dave Aholt, I need to address the fact that Charlie Voss shoots 33 on the front nine and doesn't win individual!! Something just stinks about that. Charlie does manage to take 2nd with his +4, and lead his team, consisting of Bob and Terry to a +3 victory. Now...on to Dave Aholt and his tasty day of golfing his ball. Not only did he play well, he carried his teammates Bill and Rich to victory on the back and total +1, +1. Dave won the front +5, back ,+3 and total +8 for a clean sweep of the individual game. Excellent day Dave!! Dean V takes 3rd on the front +3, and ties 2nd total with a non-relative of the Voss clan, Charlie J (who is part of team Charlie btw...) Bob and Rich tie 2nd on the back. Excellent front nine Charlie, and great 18 Dave. On a side note...during the Beech Mountain Men's day 2 man stableford competition yesterday, my 20 handicap partner and I took 2nd out of 10 teams in championship flight, losing by one point. Now...back to watching the U S Open.

TUESDAY RESULTS

8 Old Timers took to the links yesterday and Charlie V continued his solid play as he led his team of Bob, Dave D, and Terry to victory on the front, +2, tie on the back, -2 and another victory for total at even. Bill, Rich, Tom, and Charlie J managed to tie the back. Bob and Charlie J tied the front, +2. Bill won the back with a nice little 35, good for +4. Charlie V takes 2nd on the back, +3 and wins total +4. Bill comes in 2nd total with +3. Hot but surprisingly comfortable. Greens have slowed greatly in the past week. Ask Bob Coleman. No matter what he tried, he couldn't get it to the hole. But he took it like a true gentleman. Eight players ... two changes. Charlie Voss +1 to 29. Tom Dunlavy -1 to 22. Aholt 27 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 33 * Coleman 33 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 22 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 30 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 30 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 26 * Morris 22 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 24 * Sharma 31 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 29 * Voss, D. 33 *

LONG.... HOT.... MUGGY....SATURDAY

Well..six Old Timers spent their Saturday struggling to make their points. But one Charlie V, made it look like a stroll in the park. Charlie led his team (Leroy and Tom) to victory on the back with even, and total -6. Charlie easily swept all three legs of the individual with +1, +1, +2. No one else was close to catching him. Bill, Dave D, and Dennis managed to win the front by one stroke with -5. Leroy, Tom, and Bill tie 2nd on the front with -1. Tom is 2nd on the back with even, and 2nd total -1. Yesterday was definitely a change from the recent solid Old Timer play. And now a few words from our Acting Commish................. It was a hot, muggy day. Typical of summer in Missouri. Most of us are used to it, but it was particularly unpleasant because it took 4 hours and 35 minutes to play. Lots of sitting in the heat and waiting. This past week, we were informed that golf on Mondays, when there isn't a tournament, will be pushed back to a 2 p.m. start at the earliest. When you're still working for a living, that's not a big deal. But when you're an "Oldtimer," it is a big deal. It essentially tells you there will be no golf on Mondays anymore. Not only that, we won't even have the option from October to April, because the club will be closed ... period. But, "that's what other country clubs do." Some of us remember that renting our golf course for outside events was limited to one Monday a month. Well, Boards change and I'm sure no current Board member remembers that rule. I believe this month alone there are three Monday tournaments. My point is simply this. If we want to run FCCC like a country club, then let's do just that. Let's start realizing that membership has its privileges. No more guests on weekends before one p.m. ... like other country clubs ... no more reciprocals on weekends before one p.m. ... like other country clubs ... no more outside tournaments on weekends before one p.m. and then by tee time only, not shotgun starts that close the course for members hours earlier. Let's allow those people who paid to be members of a country club ... and particularly those who work all week and look forward to their weekend golf ... let's let them enjoy the perks of their membership. In other words, let's start treating FCCC like a country club and not like a public course. There were no quota changes. Aholt 27 * Blackwell 30 * Clark 33 * Coleman 33 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 23 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 30 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 30 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 26 * Morris 22 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 24 * Sharma 31 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 28 * Voss, D. 33 *

RAINY DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS

Golf cancelled yesterday due to rain, and it has rained almost all day today. It looks a little warm in WashMo, but it's 59 here today. During a break in the weather Lynne and I came upon this new Fawn, who was wet and shivering.
These are a couple of pictures from outside our house.
This is the current view.
Make sure you hydrate and use your sunscreen.

A NICE TURNOUT...BUT ANOTHER COMPLETE SWEEP

The high power trio of Mike, Randy B, and Bob showed why they deserve high qoutas, as they swept the day with +1 on the front, +2 on the back, and +3 total. The remaining three teams managed to return only a positive nine twice at +1. Must have been a tough day on the links. Bob continues his solid play with a 34 on the front good for +3 and a winner. Bill was 2nd with +2, and Dennis 3rd +1. Tom found his way on the back and won with a nice +4. The acting commish ties 2nd with Terry and Randy at +3. 7 0f 12 Old Timers regained their form and were positive on the back. Bob agains win total with +5 (70 for the day). Tom and Dave D tie 2nd for total with +3. 7/12 were even or positive for the day. TEE TIMES ON THURSDAY, JUNE 24 WILL BEGIN AT 11:20 DUE TO METRO CUP. PLEASE BE ON THE PRACTICE GREEN BY 11:05 FOR THE DRAW. Please stay in touch with the group in front of you. Thank you for your attention to pace of play. Bob Coleman +1 to 33. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 23. A TALE OF TWO NINES

With the exception of Mike Clark, who had two positive nines +2, +2, and didn't win front, back, or total; everyone else had one positive nine, and then one negative nine, or just had a bad day altogether. Strange day on the links, at least on paper. Bill, Charlie V, and Rich were each positive on the front and easily won that with +5. Not good at all on the back, and then won total wih -4 (you can do the math and figure out their back nine score). Dave D, Bob and Dennis take the back at +4. Rich won thw front +3, Mike 2nd with +2, and three of you tied for 3rd at +1. Dave D with a sweet little 34 on the back was +6, Bob came in 2nd +3, and steady Mike comes in 3rd, +2. Dave D captures total with +5, Mike at +4 is 2nd, and Bill and Charlie V 3rd with even. Mike and Dave D, both had very nice days today. Well done. Adios from beautiful Beech Mountain. Dister +1 to 29. Clark +1 to 34. Miller -1 to 24. Aholt 27 * Clark 34 * Coleman 32 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 29 * Dunlavy 22 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 30 * Harrison 25 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 30 * Kavanaugh 27 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 25 * Miller 24 * Moosmann 26 * Morris 23 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 24 * Sharma 31 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 28 * Voss, D. 33 *

THURSDAY OLD TIMER ACTION

Reporting in from Beech Mountain, North Carolina. This morning it is extremely foggy, with minimal visibility. Our tiny roundhouse is on Skiloft Rd, which runs along one of the Ski Resort runs. We are about 150 feet below the top of the mountain...5506'. For sure it will definitely be an interesting two months. Luxury and spaciousness are two words you won't hear me say. First stop yesterday was to visit the club membership office and get our photo id's as transfer members of Beach Mountain Club. Lynne and I will be trying our hand with PickleBall, and hiking the 27 miles of trails on the mountain. We are hoping to play a little golf this weekend, before my first round with the boys Monday. I will continue to try and bore you with more of our activities as time moves on..... Nine Old Timers showed up yesterday and six of you were treated to a severe beatdown from Dennis, Charlie J, and Rich, as they swept all three ways with an impressive +7, +5, +12 day. Led by the solid play from Dennis +3 (2nd), +5 (1st), and +8 also (1st). Charlie J wins the front with +5, takes 3rd on the back, and 2nd total +5. Very good days by both. Rich was heard to say "thanks guys" as he left the club. Dave D had a decent day tying 3rd on the front with Charlie V, 2nd on the back +2, and 3rd total +3. Enjoy the weekend, as the Krakow Cup takes over the course. Charlie Johnson +1 to 30. Dennis Harrison +1 to 25. Jeff Kavanaugh -1 to 27. TUESDAY OLD TIMER RESULTS

A good showing of old timers (12), took to the fairways yesterday, and solid play continued. It would be nice if we could fire up the rough mowers, and mow a little grass. The greens are still firm and a little slow, but they are covered in grass and the nematodes appear to have gone elsewhere. Once again, one team swept the front, back, and total. Bill, Dennis, and Tom played well with +8, +2, +10 for the day. But individual honors were swept by Bob with a really nice 2 under on the front for +5, +2 to tie 3 others on the back, and +7 to run away with total. All said it resulted in a 69 for the day. Well done Bob! Bill and Dennis +4 tie for 2nd total. Good scoring continues with 7 players positive or even for the day. Dennis Harrison +1 to 24. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 22. Bob Coleman +1 to 32. Charlie Voss -1 to 28. Aholt 28 * Clark 34 * Coleman 32 * Crow 35 * Curtis 32 * Dister 28 * Dunlavy 22 * Eggert 30 * Eichelberger 28 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 30 * Harrison 24 * Homeyer, Dale 14 * Johnson 30 * Kavanaugh 28 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 25 * Miller 25 * Moosmann 26 * Morris 23 * Nealis 25 * Purschke 24 * Sharma 31 * Stoehner 25 * Voss, C. 28 * Voss, D. 33 *
