Thursday, August 29th: Purschke Kills Again (+4)!!!

Golf News #1:  Dennis Kossmann’s doctor said that his groin surgery went well!  Dennis will have a follow up visit on September 10th and will then, hopefully, have an idea of when he can return to the links.  Hurry back Dennis!

Golf News #2:  Your blogger played golf on Wednesday at the City Club of Marietta.  I played with my daughter’s neighbor, who is a very healthy 90 year old and his much younger friend, who is 89.  Both are retired Army full bird Colonels. They have played together every Wednesday for about 25 years.  I witnessed something that I am certain is one of the rarest golf feats ever!  The 89 year old teed off on our second hole.  His ball went into the lake that is located directly in front of the tee box. He then held up the club shaft to show us that the driver head had broken off.  The 90 year old, said, “That deserves a do-over” and proceeds to hand the 89 year old his driver.  He re-tees and hits the second ball into the water.  To our amazement, he once again, holds up the club shaft to show us that the second driver head had also flown off.  Two consecutive swings and two broken drivers! Now that is one powerful 89 year old!!!

Tuesday, August 13th: Curran Leads at the Legends (+7), 70 on Par 72 !!!

The Country Club at The Legends is built into the rolling hills of Eureka, Missouri and features 335 acres of golf course and features 18 holes of championship golf built and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1989 and 9 holes of golf built and designed by Arthur Hills in 2005.  Holes 1 thru 18 are a par 72 layout with low cut zoysia fairways, with many well manicured traps, and relatively large undulating mid-speed greens.  Even though there were a lot of traps, the fairways did not feel overly claustrophobic.  The course featured some excellent practice facilities, including practice traps.  The clubhouse was large and had some upscale amenities in the locker rooms. FCCC Whites (5,440 yards) played the Legend's White (5,506).  FCCC Golds (4,816) played the Legend's Green (4,657).

Golf Quote: “You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husband’s work.” – Lee Trevino

Golf Stuff:  In colder temperatures, a golf ball and golf club don’t experience the same efficient transfer of energy as in warmer temperatures. Colder air is also denser than warm air, which means the golf ball experiences more drag and friction. Moreover, when the golfer’s muscles are warmer, they perform better as well. While the change in distance is not huge, a golf ball tends to travel about 10 more yards in warmer weather.

Golf Stuff:  At the 1935 US Open, things began to come to a head when one player turned up with 32 clubs in their bag, including a full set of both left and right-handed clubs. It was after this event that the USGA began to take a serious look at limiting the number of clubs players could carry and use.  Officially, the rules changed on September 1939 and limited the number of clubs to 14.  It’s suggested that 14 was perhaps chosen as the ideal number after a conversation between Bobby Jones and Tony Torrance at the 1936 Walker Cup about the number of clubs they each carried during their playing careers. Torrance stated that he carried only 12 clubs whereas Jones mentioned that he used 16 en route to his 1930 Grand Slam. Supposedly, they settled on 14 being a suitable limit as a compromise.
