Clark in Thailand: Chapter 4

Today is “May” day!

After yesterday’s silent caddie treatment, I was pleasantly surprised by the warm and enthusiastic reception I received from “May”, my duly appointed caddie at the Cascata club.

I had planned my day with an early departure from the Hilton and a one hour buffer prior to my tee time to take advantage of the advertised driving range and short game area at this 72 hole layout. Upon entering the gate, I can tell this is an older facility but yet it appears to be well maintained by the tightly clipped hedges lining both sides of the nearly half mile long drive. I’m looking forward to a good warm up, working out the kinks and teeing off well prepared.

You can imagine my initial reaction when I learned there is no driving range and the shortgame  area is a smallish putting green almost the equivalent of the one at our club, in not great shape with a glaring sign that says “no chipping”.

Instant Attitude…. And not Favorable!

Now I’m forced to kill the hour and a half that I had planned on using to practice prior to my tee time.

Despite my frustration at the entire situation, I refuse to let it drag down my day and May is the bright spot. She’s a nonstop conversationist in broken English and Thai and is eager to try the AI ear piece. That bit of technology and google translate has us chatting back and forth and by the time we actually get to tee off, we are on the same page.

Cascata proves to be a challenging track with nice fairways and absolutely lightning fast undulating greens.

The green speeds today rivaled our club at its fastest in early fall. Today I was not paired with anyone which was just fine by me. May and I passed the time nicely and despite playing behind foursomes and a fivesome, we got waved thru by most. May informed me repeatedly that she was “single” and let it slip that today was her 40th birthday. She guessed my age at 50…. So I’m feeling pretty good about myself.

I made sure May had some extra Thai Bhat at the end of the day to guarantee her birthday is a memorable one.
