Mike Clark in Thailand: Chapter 15

I must say, what a pleasant day it was. As I quickly write this before dinner, I’m sitting on my little porch surrounded by tropical greenery with a lovely light wind blowing, enjoying a newly purchased cigar and a double black coffee. Somewhere Japanese flute music is softly playing in the background and the birds are singing.

Today I had the pleasure of playing Palm Hills Cc and was happily surprised to be paired with the Irish lovebirds Peter and Ann again. They are extremely competitive against each other and Ann gets 5 a side. I asked them if it’s a monetary bet and Ann gleefully exclaims in her heavy Irish accent “oh no, we play for special favors if ya know what I mean “

Pretty cool to see as Peter is 78 and Ann 73 and they are still rocking it.

My caddie today is “Som”. She is a 10 year veteran of Palm Hills and knows the course well. No need for the translation ear piece as she speaks a little English and I’m getting a bit better at basic Thai phrases related to golf. We get along splendidly. After watching me hit on the range she’s got my clubs and yardages figured out.

One takeaway on these Thai caddies is once you are on the green, I think they feel obligated to say something regarding your impending putt and they dearly love lining up the ball. Often times it’s not even close and it requires a polite adjustment.

A double bogey on an easy par 5 after a poor wedge shot gets buried in the wet sand bunker…..and a closing bogey three putt on 18 from above the hole and side hill yields a 73 today. It’s a darn good score on a tough course but I should have been under. Gotta get better.

We had a brief tropical downpour & players from all over the course are huddled under the rest station.

Maintenance workers taking a break.  Most are refugees from Myanmar & work very hard for little pay.

These dogs followed us for several holes after I bought them a chicken leg.
