Gett'em While They're Hot!!!

👀

Not only will you look sharp...but your teammates will remember who you are during the round.

What a Beautiful Day Yesterday

Yesterday reminded me of typical days during the summer in places like Maine, Northern Wisconsin or the Colorado mountains. Not the typical stuff we have in the pizza oven Midwest. So..just enjoy it and hope that we have a few more just like it. The surfaces we try to putt on are still in need of a lot of TLC. Every putt is a different speed...I am truly amazed at the good scores being posted. Yours truly was -4, -4, -8 yesterday, and I only had a couple of ridicuously bad swings. Oh well, maybe I was enjoying the company and the weather too much and not paying attention to the reason we were there. On to those Old Timers that really golfed their balls. Bob, Mike and Charlie V swept the team game with +2, +5, +7. Everyone on the team was positive for the day, but only Bob with +4 on the back could cash in on the in dividual front. Speaking of the front, Terry wins that with another +4. Terry also receives the least improved award as he goes from +4 to -6 on the back. Seems like he gave his teammates a shanking exhibition on the back. Apres golf...he was seen embibing in his third beer as I was departing the course to do the same in private at my own home. My teammate Rich P held on to win total with a nice +5. Rich was extremely happy to be allowed by the Acting Commish to play the par threes from the Forward tee boxes, as he made par on each of them. Congratulations and many thanks to Old Timer's Jim E, David D, and Charlie V for attending the FCCC Board meeting monday night and requesting that monies be allocated to bring in an expert second opinion to assist us with our substandard surfaces that we putt on. Well Done and Thank You!!! Now...on to the updated point quotas... Lots of changes with only 9 players. Remember, three of our 70 to 75 year-olds moved to the Gold par threes. Their quotas automatically increased by one. The other increase in two of their quotas was as a result of their play and the scores they dropped. Charlie Voss +2 to 31. Rich Purschke +2 to 25. Charlie Curtis -1 to 32. Bill Hall -1 to 27. Dennis Harrison +1 to 27. Terry Moosmann -1 to 27. Updated Quotas and A Few Words of Ruledom From the Acting Commish...

It has been suggested by several members that it isn't necessary for those over 70 and under 75 to hit from the white tees on par 3s.  We are no longer playing greenies and from the straw polls that I've been taking, fewer than 50% of our members want to see them return.  The reasons are valid.  Very few want to touch the markers on the green.  The measurements take too long and slow down play.

So, if you're in that over-70-under-75 age group and don't wish to be included in greenies should they return, you're welcome to play all holes from the gold tees.  If you wish to make the move, notify the acting commish and he will adjust your numbers.  Your quotas will go up 1.  Once you make the move, you must stay there.  No adjustments up and down will be made.  If greenies ever return to our game, you can play them again when you reach 75 years of age.

Greenies and skins are options at this time. If you want to deal with them, volunteer now.  But, the monies will not be included in the current financial structure.

Charlie Curtis +1 to 33.

Well...So Much for My Earlier Blog(s) Lamenting Upon the Numerous Good Scores Not Being Affected By Our Really Shitty Putting Surfaces!!!

I think that it is more than fair to stop calling those things we putt on as Greens. They are no longer deserving of that name...henceforth until they are returned to us in good shape..hopefully sooner than next spring...they will be referred to surfaces that we putt on. Okay on to todays results...11 Old Timers came out on a really nice Saturday in August. If you haven't been told...until we return to playing all 18 of our holes..we will reduce your required point quota by 2 for every hole that is closed. So today since hole 11 is closed everybody needed 2 less points. If you usually needed 15 points on the back...today and going forward it will be 13. The acting Commish will take all of this into consideration as he figures out our daily quotas. Clear as mud??? Okay. Okay. Terry led his teammates Dennis H and K, along with lucky Charlie J to victory on the front with a solid +2 and total at -1. Terry also won individual on the front with +3. Yours truly led the team of Bob, Ryan C, and Bill to victory on the back with even, while winning individual on the back and total +2, +3. Congratulations to all for having to guess the green speed of each hole that we play and somehow getting the ball in the leather.

Old Timer of the Week will not be awarded as no one successfully played without a negative 9 this week. Dave D remains the title  holder and can continue to park in my spot.

If you haven't been following the US Men's Amateur being held at Bandon Dunes..please take a few minutes to watch golf on some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. It is spectacular!!

Charlie out.

I Know The Greens are Shitty...but what is with all of these good scores???

I've got to state the obvious...our greens are really shitty!! But Old Timers are not really feeling the sad shape of our greens. Scoring is still good to really good. Before I rehash today's activity..I must acknowledge the steller play by Old Timer Dave A on the back nine...Birdies on all three par threes!! Nicely done Dave..Dave D and Dennis H continue their good play as they drag Charlie J back into positive golfing. They win the front and total +9, +14. Not sure if they were playing at old FCCC or somewhere else?? Charlie V, Dave a, and Dennis K win the back with +7. Baby Ray (cousin of ... you guessed it Baby Ruth) wins the front at +5. Dennis H and K tie the back at +5, and Dennis H wins total +6. So again to state the obvious...Why are we shooting so many positive scores with such shitty greens?? I know that I am putting like a dog...5 three putts today alone. Oh well enough about the shitty greens...Dave D continues his streak of positive rounds to 10 without a negative result...pretty freaking amazing if you asked me. Enough said tonight...see you all Saturday.

New Point Totals .....And A Few Fiery Words From Our Acting Commish

Feel free to forward this blog post to anyone on your email list that is a club member. Many thanks to Charlie Voss for his many years of serving on the thankless Greens Committee.

IS IT TIME TO POKE THE BEAR?

That is a phrase borrowed from our blogger, but as your acting commish, let me explain what it means.

It all started this past Monday night when our own Charlie Voss attended the Greens Committee meeting.  Charlie has concerns about the condition of our golf course ... particularly the current demise of most of our greens.  The Greens Committee meetings are precisely the place for those concerns to be put on the table and discussed.  Hopefully an understanding of the issues will lead to a solution.

Before Charlie had an opportunity to voice his concerns ... concerns, I might add, that are echoed by a great many of the Oldtimers ... and as well by a great many golfing members of our club ... but I digress.  Before Charlie spoke, four other members of the Greens Committee gave Ed a vote of confidence.  They said, and I paraphrase, that they know he's been working many hours to address the problems and that they are behind him all they way.

Ed said both at the meeting and in his blog which went to every club member, that the culprit is the lance nematode, a bug we've been dealing with for 5 or 6 years now, and a bug that is apparently here to stay.  Ed also said there is a chemical which could possibly address the lance problem.  But, it costs $200 a gallon and we can't afford that.  He also said that the three applications of growth retardant he applied to the greens this spring didn't exacerbate the lance problem.

It was suggested by a member of the committee that our abundance of trees in close proximity to our greens might be a contributor to the problem.  If so, he continued, let's cut all the trees down within 50 yards of every green.  Ed agreed that trees were a big part of the problem and that it would be fine with him if the trees were removed.

It was also mentioned that if it hadn't been for the Coronavirus, there would have most likely been a hefty dues increase, because we are simply not paying enough for our club.

(Allow me to digress again.  I was always taught that an increase in price should reflect an increase in value.  I joined this club a third of a century ago for one reason and one reason only ... to play golf with my wife and my friends.  I don't care a whit about the pool, the clubhouse, the parties.  I totally understand that other members don't care about golf.  I always thought we could peacefully coexist.  But the value of the golf course the past five or six years has not warranted a dues increase.  In fact, in almost every measurement category, the golf course has been in decline.)

So, we need to Poke the Bear.  We need golfing representation on our Board of Directors or our club controllers will continue to turn their heads away from the obvious ... OUR GOLF COURSE NEEDS HELP!  Please, those of you who are eligible, place your names on the ballot.  We will vote for you.  We will support you.

I would appreciate it if every Krakow Oldtimer would thank Charlie Voss for taking the brunt of  verbal abuse every month at these meetings.  There isn't a person at this club who is more familiar with our golf course than Charlie.  He could write a novel on the suggestions he's made to improve our course both visually and in play-ability.  If only he could put his ideas into practice, what a great golf course we would have.

And one final thing.  Can we not afford to spend $200 a gallon for a chemical that could restore our greens?  How much did a gallon of that growth retardant cost?

Rich Purschke up 1 to 23.  Dennis Harrison up 1 to 26.  Dennis Kossmann up 1 to 26.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON MASSACRE!!!

Yousa!! It is now possible to understand how General Custer felt on that fateful day. Feeling pretty good going in...then a shitstorm hits big time. The team of Dennis H and K, along with Rich kicked some serious butt yesterday. Sweeping everything available..team and individual. The team score was +13, +1, +14. Got to be a record in there somewhere. Dennis H won the front with +7, and Rich won the back and total..+4, +7. 7 Old Timers were positive or even yesterday, continuing some good play on worsening greens conditions. It appears that those greens that are suffering are not getting any better, although there is some sign of new growth in a few areas. Along with updated point totals, I will be reporting the updated wins/losses for everyone later tonight. Stay cool and we'll see you Thursday.

Old Timer of the Week...and updated point totals

Overall last week was a good one for yours truly. Beautiful weather, with a little rain, two day caddie gig, winning a few bucks from the PGA Championship, and watching the tourney in prime time from beautiful San Francisco. Life doesn't get much better...Oh but it does...I managed to finally shoot my age last week.

Enough about me...it's time to congratulate the Acting Commish as our latest Old Timer of the Week!!! Dave has continued his stellar play for the past two weeks (even though his displeasure with the greens and rough continue???) Dave has played his last five rounds at even or better. Without access to a digital history of our play...I declare this as the record of good play for the Old Timers Golf Group!! Well done Commish.  See you all tomorrow at the course.

Congratulations to 17 year old Rose Zhang for winning this years Women's Amateur. Quite an accomplishment that took 38 holes of match play. Gabby Ruffels suffered a deadly lip out from 3 feet on the 38th hole.

Rich Purschke drops 1 to 22.

It's Warming up, and so are the scores!!

7 of the 10 players today posted positive point totals. As bad as the greens are...it doesn't seem to slow us down. 4 of the 7 were +4 or better. Some really good scoring by the Old Timers. The team of Dennis H, Ray, Jeff K, and Charlie C won the front and total with +3, +6. Team Charlie (V and J), and Terry win the back with a nice +5. Dennis and Jeff tie the front +3 each, and Charlie C wins the back and total with +4, +6. For anyone who I haven't alrSan Francisco Skyline Golden Gate Bridge Landscape Fine image 0eady told...I finally shot my age today...69.

Updated point totals and Old Timer of the week to be sent out tomorrow. Let's all sit back and watch a little PGA action tonight. Who doesn't love San Francisco!!!!!

Another Beautiful August Day...

It's hard to believe it is August..with the exception of a few shitty green surfaces..the grass is still green and healthy, and the course looks good. I would like to point out that Meadowbrook CC has considerably more bermuda rough than we do. Bob, Dennis K, and Rich swept the team game with +3, +5, +8. Rich and Dave D tie the front at +2. Dennis H and K tie the back with +4. Three way tie for total......+4, Dennis H and K, along with Rich. The acting Commish continues his solid play with a fourth day in a row without a negative round. Nicely played. Silently cheer for Ryan E and his caddie (yours truly) to have a solid round today, advancing to the finals tomorrow at the Metropolitan Amateur. Enjoy one more day of great weather.

Was Yesterday Not a Beautiful Day?

Gorgeous day to challenge our skills. Sure, half of our greens suck big time, but 7 out of 10 Old Timers were positive for the day. Everyone on the Dave D, Dennis K, and Terry M team was positive, as they took home most the cash. They split the front +4, won the back +4 and total +8. Great day. Dennis H, Rich, and Charlie J & C tie the Front. Dave, Dennis H, and Charlie J tie the front at +3. Dennis K brings home the back also at +3. Dave D continues his positive streak of plus days to win total +4. Bob, Mike and Bill...thanks for playing quickly.

Updated quotas below...didn't I tell you he would raise my points???

9 Old Timers Toughed It Out Today

Soggy conditions that kept the ducks at home and greens that were all over the place challenged the Old Timers today. Terry with +3 led Ray and Leroy to a front nine victory +2. Bob, Dennis K and Charlie C won the back and total with +5, +6. Dennis K and Jeff K tie the back +3, and Bob and Charlie C tie total at +3. Only Dean and Charlie J, failed to cash in today.

Old Timer of the Week Award finally has another winner this week. Old Timer Charlie Voss ekes out the trophy with rounds of +1,+2,+3 and +1,+2,+3. Nicely done!! With rounds of +2,E,+2 and +3, E, +3 Dave D comes in a close second. Also nicely played, but there can only be one winner. I can see it now...somehow my quota will increase this week. Wink..wink.

See you all Tuesday.
