Old Timer's hit the links

Many thanks to the Acting Commish for his extra duty these past 10 days while I have been frolicking in the mountains of North Carolina.

We have mentioned this several times....please ensure that you are using the correct point totals for each person in your group. we do play by a set of rules, and turning in an incorrect scorecard can be a disqualifier of your team. it is not that difficult to do this. enough said!!!

Team #1    -4   -2   -6
Coleman   -3   -3   -6
Morris        0  +2  +2
Dennis      -1   -1   -2

Team #2   -1   +2  +1
Jim E.      -1   +1     0
Jeff K.      0    -1     -1
Dister       0   +2    +2

Team #3   -2   +3   +1
Hall         -2    +3   +1
Sharma     0    +1   +1
Terry M.   0     -1    -1

The team of Eichelberger, Kavanaugh and Dister win the front at even and tie total at +1 with the team of Hall, Sharma and Moosmann.  Hall's team wins the back at +3.  Individually, 5 players (Morris, Kavanaugh, Dister, Sharma and Moosmann tie the front at even.  Hall wins the back at +3 and Morris and Dister tie total at plus 2.

The team of Coleman, Morris and Harrison mistakenly had Morris' quota at 22.  He is, in fact, 23, that's why the scores don't jibe with their scorecard.  Please check your quotas before playing.

Bill Hall -1 to 28.  Bob Coleman -1 to 33.  Dennis Harrison -1 to 23.

Thursday Old Timer Action

Sorry for the delay in reporting Thursday's recap. I deleted the email from the Acting Commish..probably the thin air up here at 5000 feet, (or the VO and water).
The greens here at Beech Mountain Golf Club are Poa Annua (on purpose) which shows a lot of ball marks and deer tracks. everything else is a bent/fescue mix from tee to green. The greens were rennovated the past 4 years by the superintendent from Augusta National ( yeah..the real one!!) He does greens work during the time Augusta National closes. I played yesterday with the former Greens Chairman who oversaw the rework. He told me he thought he new a lot about greens before, but received a terrific education throughout the four years of rennovation. The "Augusta folks know their shit" period.
they also changed out the bunker sand to "Augusta sand". Pretty special golf course here, like I mentioned earlier, Similar to FCCC but on steroids. Only three of the holes are relatively flat, with the rest playing dramatically up or down mountain. Excellent place to have a laser with built in slope readings. FYI.. for me my shots were going 10 to 15 yards further at 5000 feet. I have never hit so may good shots over the green on the fly. It was interesting...guys playing here for 20 to 30 years still have a hard time reading the greens. Sound familiar??? Okay, enough of my rambling about Beech Mountain. Below will be the report I received from the Acting Commish...it seems he was not happy....

The acting commish will not comment on today's round.  He is not worthy of making comments.  He will simply report on the results and quota changes.  It would be nice to hear how the blogger played at beautiful Beech Mountain.  Maybe he will grace us with a few words.

Team #1    -2   -4    -6
Jim E.      +3    -2   +1
Charlie J.  -2   +1    -1
Dennis      -3   +1    -2
Dister         0    -4    -4

Team #2     0     -7    -7
Bob           -1    -2    -3
Jeff K.      +2    -1   +1
Charlie V. -1      0    -1
Aholt         0     -4    -4

Team #3   -8      0    -8
Hall          -3     -3    -6
Rich         -5     +1   -4
Terry         0     +2   +2

So as you can see, each team won a leg.  Team #2  won the front at even.  Team #3 won the back at even.  And Team #1 won total at -6.

Individually, Jim Eichelberger won the front at +3.  Terry Moosmann won the back and total at +2 +2.

Terry Moosmann +1 to 27 and Charlie Voss +1 to 29.

Who needs the New Drivers???

Kevin Kisner is currently gaming a Callaway driver that is several years old!!! If he doesn't think he needs new technology and the latest and greatest.....why should we???

OLD TIMER of the WEEK

Some of the scores from last week were terrific!! Such as Terry last tuesday..+7,+3,+10; Dave A also on tuesday +5,+3.+8. Thursday Dennis +4,+3,+7; Charlie V an outstanding day with +5,+6,+11. Saturday saw Dennis again +4,+4,+8; many, many good scores last week, by a lot of you Old Timers...but no one made it through the week without a bad 9, or bad day. Dennis started off the week -10 (ouch!), As quoted earlier this week by the acting Commis, neither he nor Charlie V could'nt cut the cheese on Saturday. Terry ended up the week with a +15, but on Saturday started off -1.....I know pretty strict of me to place so much weight on one missed putt, or one sculled wedge, or one bad bounce. But.....we all wear big boy pants...there are no participation ribbons just for showing up. So instead of a single Old Timer of the week winner...everyone that was positive points for the week will be declared "Almost Old Timer of the Week"!!
Positive totals were achieved by:
Terry..+15
Dennis..+5
Newcomer..Joe G..+4
Charlie V..+10
Dave D..+12
Mike C..+5
Bill..+5
Bob..+2
Well done by all of you!!!
and don't hurt your shoulders patting yourselves on the back.
Today, I once again get to tackle Beech Mountain Golf Club. I've been invited to play in the "better players Friday game". Hopefully my second round here will be better than the first ...82, but I'm blaming the altitude change 5000 feet. I coundn't figure out how far my shots would go. I know...some of you are mouthing to yourself..he never knows how far or were his shots go!! Stay safe, wear your mask and kiss your wife or dog as you leave the house.

Reporting in from Beech Mouintain NC

The Acting Commish is quite the wordsmith...I think he could convince you that there is a pony in that large pile of shit! I'm jealous.....
Picture of course from Clubhouse deck.

As written by our Acting Commish.....

A perfect day for golf ... or was it?

At first blush, the 80 degree, cloudless day, the gentle zephyr from the NE, proclaimed "what could be a better day for golf than this."  And, it mostly was.  The company was terrific, the play moved along nicely, but, in most cases, the scoring posted by the 9 Krakowians didn't equal the scoring from last week.  There were bright spots.  Charlie Johnson posted +3 on the front ... an easy, individual win.  Rich Purschke notched +4 on the back, +5 total to round out the individual honors.

The team of C. Johnson, C. Voss and Dave Aholt won the front at Even.  The team of Purschke, Mike Clark and Dave Dister won the back at +7 and total at +6.

That left the team of Harrison, Hall and Moosmann on the outside looking in with very respectable scores of -2, +5, +3.

The zephyr seemed to make the already firm greens even firmer as they dried out, but even that was no match for some of the oldtimers. Three of the 9 combatants were plus on the front.  Six were plus on the back and six on total.  Good, but no match to the 11 pluses out of 12 last week.

Rich Purschke +1 to 22.  Dennis Harrison +1 to 24.

SATURDAY OLD TIMER ACTION as REPORTED BY THE ACTING COMMISH

As i sit here in the mountains with a temperature of 65 degrees, watching golf and having my second VO and water...i submit to you the wit of your acting commish reporting on todays action...well said my friend.

Five stalwarts and one new guy made up the field today.  The Krakow Oldtimers welcomed Joe Gildehaus to the fold.  Unfortunately for Joe, he drew C. Voss and Dister, who couldn't cut the cheese today ... relative to the victorious team of  Hall, Harrison and Moosmann.  The latter prevailed with an outstanding +4, +6, +10.  These numbers obliterated the efforts of Gildehaus, C. Voss and Dister who limped in with a +3, +3, +6.  Second best in a 2-horse-race.

Individually Dennis Harrison shot an outstanding +4, +4, +8 today.  Dennis wins the front, ties the back with Dister and easily waltzes off with the 18-hole total.

A bit of business if I may.  It's my understanding that most of the field has been playing a ball hitting the stick and coming to rest "inside-the-leather" as having been holed. We should all be playing the same rule, so henceforth, until the little foam donut has been removed from the hole, a ball that hits the stick and comes to rest "inside the leather" shall be declared holed out.

Gildehaus +2 to 26. Harrison +1 to 23. Moosmann +1 to 26.

THE ACTING COMMISH SPEAKS......

Positively Amazing Play

Twelve Krakowians took to the links today and 11 of them returned scores of even to their quotas or better.  That's correct!  There was only one negative score.

The team of Clark, Coleman, Moosman and C. Voss were dominantly successful on all three legs.  With only one golfer posting a score of even on one of the 9s, the other 11 scores on their team were positive.  They shot a record +9, +11, +20.

The other 2 teams actually thought they had a chance ... both teams posting totals of +9.  The team of Eichelberger, Harrison, Kavanaugh and Purschke got there posting +2 and +7.  And the team of  Aholt, Dister, Hall and Sharma got their +9 total with +3 on the front and +6 on the back.

Individual honors go to the one and only Charlie Voss.  He and Dave Dister tied the front at +5, but Charlie left everyone in the dust with a natural 2-under-par 34 on the back, giving him +6 on the homeward 9 and +11 on the day.

Dister +1 to 28.  Hall +1 to 29. C. Voss +1 to 28.

Beautifiul Day With Lots of Tears and Cheers

12 Old Timers took to the lush and healthy confines of FCCC yesterday. The greens are starting to soften up a little, the rough is being mowed, but is still very healthy. 9 of the 12 Old Timers made or beat their quotas as we played with a nice southeasterly breeze. Tim was dapperly dressed in his Easter outfit of pinks and purple. Didn't know that they sold those clothes in Sullivan??

Terry with a solid + 7 wins the front and drags his team on to victory to also win the front. Recipients of Terry"s strong play were Bob, Mike and Tim. Team Charlie (C & J) along with Bill and Dave A had a great day with all 4 players being positive and winning the back and total with +11 and +15. Bill wins the back at +4, and Dave A with +5, +3, +8 wins nothing for his stellar play. Terry holds on to win total with +10. Some good golfing of the ball took place yesterday.

Saturday Old Timer Action

The acting commissioner would like to apologize for getting the hopes up of the Krakow Old Timers.  The Superintendent, his assistant and two of our Board members were there when we were told that the rough would be cut and the greens would be made more receptive.  These promises have not been kept and for that, all I can say is that I'm sorry.  Perhaps someone else would like to try.  The acting commish is officially done.  All kudos to our own Charlie Voss for doing everything in his power to give us a better golf course.  I can only hope he will persevere.

Six Old Timers showed up on this fabulous Saturday.  The team of Coleman, Harrison and Moosman were superior in almost every way.  They won the front -4 to -7, the back +1 to even and the total -3 to -7.  Terry Moosman won the front at +1.  Dennis Harrison won the back at +5.  And the lone victor from the team of Hall, Sharma and Dister was Dister for individual total at +3.

Bob Coleman       0   -1 -1           B. Hall         -6    0    -6

Why is Golf So Difficult???

Twelve Old Timers came to the course with the intention of playing good golf yesterday. Well..some did and most didn't. Each team won a leg of the bet. Again, you know who you are. Bill and Dennis split the front with nice +3's. Jeff K with his new haircut wins the back at +5, which included 3 birdies. Nicely done. Bill, who is on a winning streak...wins total with +6.

Updated quotas...

Bill Hall +1 to 28.  Jeff Kavanaugh +1 to 27.  Rich Purschke +1 to 22.  Dave Dister -1 to 27.  Bob Coleman -1 to 34.

The rain stopped, the grass grew, the sun popped out and golf was played.

Six Old Timers showed up for a little golf today as the rain departed, and the sun made an appearance.
Scoring was really difficult as no one was able to be positive for the entire day. +1 was the best anyone could manage all day. The front nine was tied at -4. You know who you were. Team Charlie J and C, along with Bill won the back by one point -4, -5. Whew!! Charlie V won the front with +1. Bob and Charlie C tied the back with +1, and Bill wins total at even for the day.

A big thank you is in order to our fellow Old Timer Charlie V for his long term membership on our Greens Committee. From personal experience several of us know of the challenges of being on this committee and trying to make our course be the best it possibly can. After last nights greens meeting, we should be seeing a little softer greens and shorter rough on our course. Many thanks to Charlie and Dave D for attending the meeting last night and making several requests to improve the playing conditions of our course. Well done.

See you all Thursday!!!

New lost ball rule!!!!!

Effective immediately...if and only if...a shot from an Old Timer cannot be found on a non penalty area of the course..that is verified by another player in the group to not be in a penalty area.. said player shall drop without penalty in the area that the shot appeared to have landed.

Saturday Action and Old Timer of the Week

Saturday was a warm one, and junior Old Timer Ray Sharma was playing way over his head. Ray drug his two teammates Dave D, and Bill to a tie on the back +1, and total victory +1. Ray wins the back +6, and total +7. If your counting, Rays teammates were -5, -6 the back and total. Nicely done Ray, and good draw dave d and bill. Leroy +2 won the front, and his team along with bob and dean won the front +1. Charlie c, Dennis, and Terry tied the back +1. With the exception of Ray, scoring was pretty meager.

Old Timer of the Week was a nail biter this week. Three players were under serious consideration for this weeks selection. Any other week, any of them could easily wear the crown. Even though Terry bought me a cold beer after Saturdays round...hint hint...it came down to Mike and Charlie V. Charlie was +2+1(+3) and +2 +2 (+4) for +7 for the week. Mike edges him out by one point as he was +4,even (+4) and +4, even (+4) for a total of  +8 for the week. Terry had one bad 9 with a -4 to fall out of consideration. Rich had a seriously good day on Tuesday, but couldn't find the course the other two days. Congratulations to Mike C for another victory as Old Timer of the Week. Well done.

Ray Sharma +1 to 29.  Dean Voss -1 to 33.

Steller play causes upward revisions to point totals

Old Timer of the Week competition is fierce so far this week. Several of you are battling it out. Remember, you must play at least two times in the week to be considered. (rich, i'm talking to you!!)

Harrison was 22.  Hall was 27.  Crow was 34.  All three were incorrectly listed.

After this round: Charlie V. +1 to 27.  Mike Clark +1 to 32.  Charlie C. +1 to 32.  Charlie J. -1 to 26. Bob C. -1 to 35.  Jeff K. -1 to 26.

Thursday Old Timers Sizzle along with the heat.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it is really nice to see all of the pool activity that resumed this week. It was just like my early childhood...going to the country club with my parents...playing with all of my friends....wait we didn't belong to a country club..we walked thru the poison ivy to get to Plattin Creeks sandy shores. So much for reliving my past...Some really good scoring took place yesterday with four Old Timers posting +4 on the front. mike, terry, bill and yours truly split the mighty sum of 2.75. bill continued his stellar play on the back with +5 and +9 total, winning the back and total.
Charlie v, Mike, and dennis sweep all three legs of the team game...+8, +5, +13. Nicely done boys.

As more Old Timers join the Saturday game...I am officially declaring it to be included in determining the Old Timer of the Week. As always, winner of this prestigious award rest soley on my vision of who best demonstrated the skills, team play, and comraderie that is part of the game. Also, envelopes of cash cannot hurt your chances.

See you all Saturday

Both the temps and Rich are sizzlin!!

Rich continues his sizzlin play as he drags his team consisting of  rich, dave d, bill, and charlie j to a complete sweep of the team game, +8, -1, +7.
Rich wins the individual front with +6, and total at +5. Well done rich. Dave D, and yours truly tied the back with +2 scores. 6 of the 12 Old Timers were positive yesterday, continuing the groups solid play of late. The greens had a nice pace yesterday and most of the rough was cut. It is still ridiculous on the right side of nine fairway. A little growth regulator please!
