Winter thaw

Seven Oldtimers teed it up Thursday on a day when most of them ran their cart air conditioners. The foresome, led by Jim (who tied front n total), Tim (who won back n tied total), Bill (who took second on back and had a smooth +3 on the day), and CJ (along for the ride) swept the team game +4, +7, +11. Josh Z tied front with Jim n Charlie V winning closest. CV's tee shot on 11, I'm told, had a very high artistic value also......................Oddly, the only player whose quota didn't change was one of the champs ... Mr. Eichelberger. Charlie Voss -2 to 27. Josh Zastrow +2 to 35. Jeff Kavanaugh -1 to 25. Charlie Johnson -1 to 30. Bill Hall +1 to 30. Tim Morris +1 to 23. Winter Quotas Aholt 30 * Baer 29 * Blackwell 29 * Clark 34 * Coleman 33 * Cozzo 27 * Crow 33 * Curran 27 * Curtis 30 * Dister 27 * Dunlavy 23 * Ecklekamp 36 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 31 * Fortner 30 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 30 * Herrick 28 * Johnson 30 * Kavanaugh 25 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 22 * Miller 21 * Mitchell 27 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 23 * Nealis 23 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 29 * Triplett 30 * Viox 27 * Voss, Chas 27 * Voss, Colby 32 * Voss, Dean 36 * Zastrow 35 *

Leroy’s “Free Ride”

There was a considerable amount of rust on some of the 9 Oldtimers on Tuesday but not on the Lumber Baron and Loghead. Bill took the front, CJ the back and they tied total. They also carried Leroy to a team sweep. Bob, Jim, n Mac all pocketed some money. Mike won closest on 5, Bob on 11"..........................It's great to see that nine Oldtimers hit the links with a "Bomb Cyclone" bearing down on them. Some of the scores ... not so great ... others were. With all the vagaries of the Quota Game in play, there were only two changes. Bob Coleman +1 to 33. Mike Clark -1 to 34. Winter Quotas Aholt 30 * Baer 29 * Blackwell 29 * Clark 34 * Coleman 33 * Cozzo 27 * Crow 33 * Curran 27 * Curtis 30 * Dister 27 * Dunlavy 23 * Ecklekamp 36 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 31 * Fortner 30 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 29 * Herrick 28 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 26 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 22 * Miller 21 * Mitchell 27 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 22 * Nealis 23 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 29 * Triplett 30 * Viox 27 * Voss, Chas 29 * Voss, Colby 32 * Voss, Dean 36 * Zastrow 33 *

Tuesday the 6th

Eight Oldtimers discounted a dreary day with a threat of rain to have a pretty nice day on the links. The star of the show was without doubt the Lumber Baron. He won a share of all six events with a nifty +6 total and carrying the team of Dave L, Dennis, and Leroy to a near sweep of team events. Mac carded a nice +4 on back +3 total while Charlie V tied front at +3 and was also +3 total. Unfortunately, their stalwart play was not enough to carry the deadbeat loghead, who's blow up on 17 cost them dearly. CJ won closest on 5 and Mac won 11. leroy was second on both. That will teach him to get in that last group..............Dave Loyd -1 to 22. Bill Hall +2 to 29. Winter Quotas Aholt 30 * Baer 29 * Blackwell 29 * Clark 35 * Coleman 32 * Cozzo 27 * Crow 33 * Curran 27 * Curtis 30 * Dister 27 * Dunlavy 23 * Ecklekamp 36 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 31 * Fortner 30 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 29 * Herrick 28 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 26 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 22 * Miller 21 * Mitchell 27 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 22 * Nealis 23 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 29 * Triplett 30 * Viox 27 * Voss, Chas 29 * Voss, Colby 32 * Voss, Dean 36 * Zastrow 33

WHO IS THIS OLDTIMER? AND WHY IS HE DRESSED ... YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN1

AND THIS IS WHY WE HAVE WINTER QUOTAS!

It's not often you see a team win the back and total with -9 and -10. But, you see it in the winter. My apologies for not being able to calculate your quotas after your Tuesday round, but the old laptop was packed for travel. Anyway, after your Thursday round, seven oldtimers have new quotas for the next battle. Charlie Voss - 29. Bill Hall - 27. Charlie Johnson - 31. Jim Eichelberger - 31. Mike Clark - 35. Mack Miller - 20. And, even though he won two legs in the last two contests, Tom Dunlavy dropped 4 to - 22.

Winter Quotas

Aholt 30 * Baer 29 * Blackwell 29 * Clark 35 * Coleman 32 * Cozzo 27 * Crow 33 * Curran 27 * Curtis 30 * Dister 27 * Dunlavy 22 * Ecklekamp 36 * Eggert 31 * Eichelberger 31 * Fortner 30 * Gildehaus 29 * Hall 27 * Herrick 28 * Johnson 31 * Kavanaugh 26 * Kossmann 25 * Loyd 23 * Miller 21 * Mitchell 27 * Moosmann 30 * Morris 22 * Nealis 23 * Purschke 22 * Sharma 29 * Triplett 30 * Viox 27 * Voss, Chas 29 * Voss, Colby 32 * Voss, Dean 36 * Zastrow 33 *

I must say, it did my heart good to see Mr. Loyd's name on the list of players.  I hope his wrist is healing and am looking forward to seeing his name frequently.

We fought the course and the wind won

You didn't happen to be perfect Tuesday, just determined. Of the 10 players, Four players( Randy, Bill, Tom, n Dennis) tied total at -2. Team Randy, with Mac n Terry, won back with a -9 and total with -10 and thats no typo boyz. There was some good play. Tom won front with a scorching +3 with Randy n Dennis close behind. Bill won back with a -1 with Terry n Mike one stroke back. The Charlie's won closest CV on 5 n CJ on 11. Dave is out of pocket so we play with the same quota's UFA.

The hounds gave chase but the fox ran away

Why were all the losers smiling Saturday? Because the 3 winners won peanuts but their numbers went up 4 points total. The hounds, Charlie to the second power, tied 2nd on total with a smooth +3. The fox, Leroy, ran away and hid with a 1 under par +6, +2, +8 tying back with CV who also won closest on 11. Bill won on 5. Thanksgiving prelude

A beautiful day brought 16 Oldtimers out. Mid 60s, sunshine, light wind, freshly rolled greens, and new pin placements had the Oldtimers chomping at the bits. The rust from lack of play however, shown thru for most and 3 of the four teams were a healthy minus for the day. Wolford fired a +4 on the front, then hit his tee shot in the lake on 10. After a mighty shot from the drop area and a great iron into the green he was looking at a makeable par putt. alas, after a lip out he boarded the south train. Loghead took 2nd on front and was just warming up. winning back with a +4, total with +7 he led the team of Jeff Cuzzo, Ray, and DA to victory on front and total while getting closest on 11 for good measure. Terry won 2nd on both back n total while Tom and his good son-in-law raked in the remaining change. The team of Rich, Bill, Randy, n Jeff K were steady eddies, winning back with no individual winners. Charlie V won closest on 5 to round out the winners..........................Eggert -1 to 29. Morris -1 to 22. Blackwell -1 to 30. Kavanaugh -1 to 26. Curran -1 to 27. Moosmann +1 to 30. C. Voss -1 to 29. Johnson +1 to 31. Sharma -1 to 29. A Day of Firsts

I'll get to the relatively uninteresting results in a minute (Team 4 Sweeps,) but the conversation while waiting for their arrival was the highlight of the day ... maybe the year.  In no particular order, I'll go over the topics.

1.  One of my partners who is usually one of the best in our group, pointed out to me that he wasn't playing well because the golf cart was too noisy and the exhaust fumes were toxic and messing with his ability to chip.  A first for excuses.

2.  Leroy Eggert is going to be the first in our group to play golf in Busch Stadium.  Today, November 11, 2022, Leroy and his son are going to play in the St. Louis area's first stadium golf event.  We wish them well and are eager to find out how it will be contested.

3.  Three of our Oldtimers swept last week's Chili Open here at FCCC.  Messrs. Clark, Crow and Eichelberger finished 1, 2, 3 in the Championship Flight.  Congrats to you all.

4.  Jim Eichelberger had back-to-back eagles in the event.  Because holes 7, 8, and 9 were closed due to the weather, Jim eagled 6 and then went directly to 10 where he eagled again.  None of us can think of ever seeing back-to-back eagles in a round before.  (Some of us are still trying for eagles in back-to-back decades.)  Congrats to Jim.

5.  But wait! Another first for Eichelberger is that he finally confirmed ... publicly ... that he is, indeed, a jac***f, and that he's known it for a long time.

6.  That brought the conversation around to how many of the Oldtimers have s**t their pants ... or played with someone who s**t their pants ... during a round of golf ... and kept playing after the event occurred.  Hall digressed when he told us the story of the day he was interviewing a client when the client s**t his pants.  Another member knows a guy who s**t his pants while walking Augusta National during The Masters and refused to leave to clean himself up because the ticket was so hard to get.

HILARIOUS DAY!

Now the results.  Thirteen players.  Four teams. The team of Moosmann, Kossmann, Aholt and Merrick went +6, +5, +11 to sweep the team event.    Individually, Terry was 1st on the front with a +3, Dennis was 2nd at +2 and Dave Aholt (who moved to the Gold tees for the winter ... another first) was one of three people who tied for 3rd.

On the back, Aholt took first at +4, and Charlie Voss (the only guy from another team whofinished above 3rd) took 2nd at +3 and Drew Herrick took 3rd at +2.  Aholt's +5 took total, Voss was 2nd at +4 and Terry and Dennis took total 3rd at +2.  That's right.  All 4 players on the team were plus for the day.

Dave Aholt +1 to 30.  Drew Herrick +1 to 28.  Charlie Voss +1 to 30.  Tom Dunlavy -1 to 23.  Jim Eichelberger -1 to 32.  Charlie Johnson -1 to 29.

JUGGERNAUT!

Sometimes ... maybe when you're driving home ... or walking the dog ... or standing in line to check out at Schnuck's ... you think that if that putt hadn't lipped out you would've won.  Not today!  No matter how you add it up, Hall, Moosmann and Purschke would've beaten you ... make that whupped you.  They were the only team of the four that had all their players plus ... on the front ... the back ... and total.  Not only that, two of their members finished in the top 2.  And the third would've won something individually in every round we played in the last month.  Today, he was just along for the ride.  Mind you, his +3 helped his team to a +11 front, +3 back and +14 total.  Congrats are definitely in order for their fine play.

Tom Dunlavy stuffed one to about 3-feet on 5.  Greenie!  I have no idea how close Hall was on 11, but when we went through, it looked like Eckelkamp had a shoo-in.  Greenie for Hall.

Individually, Hall won the front at +5 and total at +6.  Teammate Moosmann wins 2nd on the front at +4 and tied for 2nd total with Dister at +5.  Loghead's +3 was good enough for third on the front.  Voss and Dister shared 1st and 2nd on the back at +3 and Ryan Eckelkamp's +2 won third.

Mack Miller -1 to 21.  Terry Moosmann +2 to 29.  Leroy Eggert -1 to 30.  Bill Hall +1 to 30.  Charlie Johnson +1 to 30.  Dave Dister +1 to 27.  Dave Aholt -1 to 27.  Rich Purschke +1 to 22.

Curran Does the Unthinkable ... And Thrives

There's an old saying in the journalism biz.  When your headline reads, "Dog Bites Man," it's not much of a story.  But, when your headline reads, "Man Bites Dog," now you have a real tale to tell.

It happened on the 4th green today.  Greg Curran inadvertently left a couple clubs there.  It's happened to every single one of us.  And the older you get, the more often it happens.  Not much of a story there.  But wait!  Greg's story has an unbelievable twist that makes it real news.  The group behind found the clubs, drove forward to Greg's group and tried to return them.  Greg thanked them for the effort, but told them that the clubs didn't belong to anyone in the group.  So, like the good citizens they were, they turned the lost clubs into the clubhouse.  Again, not much of a tale to tell.  We've all done exactly the same thing.

EXCEPT ... THE CLUBS ACTUALLY WERE GREG'S ... AND HE PLAYED THE NEXT 14 HOLES WITHOUT THEM.  Not only that, Greg and his team of Eichelberger, Eggert and Moosmann won two of the three legs .. back and total.  And they couldn't have done it without Greg being +2, +1, +3 on the day!!!  The only player out of the 13 that p;ayed who was plus on everything.  That's right, Greg won 2nd individual on the front, 3rd on the back and 1st on total.  MAN BITES DOG!!!! Folks, we have a real story here. And he wins damn near everything with two of his clubs sitting in the clubhouse!!!

Fellow Oldtimers.  That has to be a first in the entire half a millennium history of golf.  Two good Samaritans try to return his lost clubs ... he refuses them ... and goes on to win the majority of the pot.  And the pin is still sticking sideways on the back of 18 green.

The front was won by Kossmann +3, Dunlavy +1 and Morris -3.  They were +1.  Kossmann wins 1st on the front, Curran 2nd and Dunlavy 3rd.  First on the back was split by Voss and Moosmann at +2.  Curran was 3rd.  Curran's +3 was 1st total, Moosmann at +2 was 2nd and Johnson and Kossmann split 3rd at Even.

Dunlavy won the #5 Greenie.  Voss won #11.

Curran goes +2 to 28 (the only guy to add to his quota today.) Voss -1 to 29. Dister -1 to 26. Hall -1 to 29. Purschke -1 to 21.  Aholt -1 to 28. Dunlavy -1 to 24.  Morris -1 to 23. Eichelberger -1 to 33.

No game Saturday. Chili Open.  See you next Tuesday.

Yup, there was a Baer in the woods sighting

A rumor was heard that the clubhouse workers needed some entertainment so they had the grounds crew speed up the greens and cut the pin on 18 back left in an impossible position. The oldtimers gave them lots of laughs and maybe some bad language they hadn't heard in awhile. 8 of the 9 oldtimers fell victim but one stood tall(he actually is tall). Dennis made a 20' rainbow putt and took the singles total along with tying front n back for second. unfortunately he had some deadbeat partners and the team of Bill, Charlie V, and Rich swept the team game with Bill winning front and CV taking back. Closest to the pin for the month is 5, won by Bill, and 11, won by Charlie C. He and guest Frank Baer in the last group had quite an audience on 18. humility is one of the virtues needed for golf after all. Thanks to three slow foursomes in front of us we barely got in before dark but there is nowhere else we would rather have been................Bill Hall +1 to 30. Charlie Voss +1 to 30. 2022 Summer Finale -- Beginning Winter Quotas

October 29th turned out to be a beautiful Fall day.  There were 11 contestants ... some very good scores ... and all 11 went home with some cash.  The quotas you'll find at the end of this blog will be the first quotas you'll use for the winter season which starts Tuesday, November 1.  They will also be the quotas we'll revert to on April 1, 2023.  The reason we're doing this is simple.  A small but ferocious group will play the game all winter.  Needless to say, the conditions can be brutal and will cause quotas to drop like the stock market.  We will use the same calculating system in the winter ... the average of your last 5 scores ... but it will all be erased on April 1st of next year and your current quotas will be re-established along with the last five scores on your current list.  This is the only fair thing to do and we are proud of the fact that we have the fairest game in the club.

Now, let's congratulate our top 5 players of the year.  These are all members who played way more than once or twice.  1. Mike Clark -- 36.  2. Jim Eichelberger -- 34.  3. Ryan Crow -- 33.  4. Bob Coleman -- 32.  5.  Leroy Eggert -- 31.

Saturday's results.  The front nine was tied at +6 by the teams of Hall, Kossmann and Morris, the first group off ... and the last team off, again at +6 ... (in very close to a five-hour day I might add) Eichelberger, Mitchell, Dunlavy and Viox.  Led by Jim E. and Dave V., these final 4 easily took total at +5. All it took was Even to win the back nine and that was spearheaded by the red-hot Moosmann who dragged Curran, Voss and Dister across the finish line.

Individually, Terry Moosmann won first on the front at +4.  Second and third place money was split three-ways by Morris, Hall and Viox.  They were at +3.  The back saw Moosmann and Viox split 1st and 2nd at +3.  Eichelberger took third at +2.  Jim had a beautiful, even-par round for the day. +7 won total.  That was crafted by Terry Moosmann.  And newcomer Dave Viox must've been a little short on lunch money this week, so he made his second (2 for 2) winning appearance for 2nd at +6.  Jim took third at +3.

Greenies were more interesting for some than for others.  Your old, Acting Commish hit a shot that disappeared behind the flagstick on #7.  His teammate Charlie Voss pulled his shot slightly.  He ended up 6 inches to the left of the flagstick.  Charlie won the greenie by less than two inches.  Tom Dunlavy won the greenie on #14.  I understand all three of those shots ended up with birdies.

Dennis Kossmann -1 to 23.  Tim Morris -1 to 24.  Jim Eichelberger +1 to 34.  Brad Mitchell -1 to 27.  Dave Viox +2 to 27.  Terry Moosmann +1 to 27.  Greg Curran -1 to 26.

OMG, another mouth to feed😀

Twas a marvelous day on the links, especially for team Loghead who were informed before tee off that he just welcomed his 4th great grandchild, aka Charles Bennet Orf into the world on Tuesday. Led by Terry the team(Jim, Dennis, n CJ) proceeded to mop up the competition. Terry had no equal in winning the singles trifecta. Bill n Greg tied on front while Jim n CJ did on back. "Thar She Blows!!!!!!!!"

Charlie Curtis mentioned today that FCCC might be the only golf course in the world on which you could play directly into the wind on all 18 holes.  It seemed that way today.  In fact, on 16, Charlie's drive went through the green, took a left turn and almost ended up on 14-green.  He hit what I thought was a good pitch.  I was standing on the left side of the green watching Charlie's shot.  As soon as his ball rose above the top of the hill, the wind hit it.  The ball seem to stop its forward progress and rose even more before dropping straight down on the side of the hill.  In all my years, I've never seen a ball do that from up close.  But the wind didn't seem to bother Voss, Hall, Dunlavy and newcomer Brad Mitchell.  All four finished the day at "plus."  And, that's saying something!  Congrats to them all.

Mitchell's +5 front ... an even par 35 ... propelled his teammates, Curtis, Kossmann and Dister to a +3 victory on the front.  Voss, Hall and Sharma took the back and total thanks to +3s on the inward 9 from Voss and Hall.  Combined with their even front and Ray's even back, they squeaked by total at +1.

Speaking of squeaking by, Brad's +5 took individual on the front and left Tom's +4 good enough for 2nd.  Voss, Hall and Dister tied for 3rd at Even.  Voss and Hall split 1st and 2nd on the back at +3 and Dunlavy took third at +1.  Dunlavy's +5 total easily won that third with Voss and Hall's +3 splitting 2nd and 3rd.

Hall took the greenie on 7 and Eggert got 14.

Charlie Curtis +1 to 31.  Tom Dunlavy +1 to 26.  Charlie Voss -1 to 29.  Ray Sharma -2 to 32.  Dennis Kossmann -1 to 25.  Brad Mitchell +1 to 28.

BACK IN THE HOOD ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY

It has been quite a while since I've had to put thoughts to paper (I know this isn't paper, but you get my drift). Today Dave D, Leroy and I had the pleasure of a four hour stand up routine from Bob. Horses and chickens, with a cadillac;Sven and Ingrid and tuna, Sven again and Lars with a donkey. If you are not familiar with these, Bob will be in town next Saturday and Tuesday. Team Charlie, Voss and Johnson along with Rich thought that they would be dragging back a few dineros on the front with a very nice plus 7, but not so fast boys...Dave D, Bob, Leroy and yours truly produced a scorching plus 9 to take the front. Then ended up plus 7 on the back for plus 16 total to sweep the team game. My three amigos made 9 or 10 birdies today!! On punched greens no less. Dave was a dancing fool with 4 birdies. Dave, Bob and Rich win the front with plus 4's. Leroy and yours truly tie the back with plus 3's. Dave takes third with plus 2. Dave wins total, plus 6, Leroy plus 5, and Tom plus 4. Greenies CJ on 7, Dave on 14. It was great to see everyone today! Several Old Timers added to their point totals, Charlie Voss +1 to 30. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 25. Dennis Kossmann -1 to 26. Dave Dister +1 to 27. Leroy Eggert +2 to 30. Oldtimers don’t fear weather

Tuesdays tidbits.....Winds 10 mph gusting to 15, temperatures mid 40's, newely punched greens, never fear. With abundant sunshine a good time was had by all those wearing long pants! Leroy was the golfer of the day winning total, tying back, placing front and winning closest on 14. He chose his partners poorly however and team one lead by Tom n Charlie J along with Bill n Mike swept the team game. Tom won front and tied for 2nd total with CJ who tied back with Bill n Leroy. Bob was closest on 7.................Tom Dunlavy +1 to 24. Leroy Eggert +1 to 28. Charlie Johnson +1 to 29. Bob Coleman -1 to 33. Mack Miller -1 to 22. The Days Dwindle Down

We're at the midpoint of the last month of the season ...  and a beautiful day it was.  Gentle breeze ... low 70s ... and only three fivesomes in front of us.  The first team out set the pace for the day.  Team Eggert swept all three team bets at +5, +3, +8.  Bill Hall took charge of the front at +3.  Leroy Eggert thought the back was a pushover at even par ... +5.  And Leroy's +5 carried over to decisively win total at +5.  Dister's +2, +1, +3 swept second individual.  Charlie Voss took third front at +1.  Bob Coleman's Even was good for third on the back.  And Hall's Even on total placed third for him.  Only three of the ten participants were Even or better for the day.

There was no Greenie on #7.  Leroy's 10-footer (which he converted with a rare birdie) held up on #14.

Leroy Eggert +1 to 27.  Charlie Voss -1 to 29.  Tom Dunlavy -1 to 23.  Charlie Johnson -1 to 28.  Terry Moosmann -1 to 26.

How'd Ya Like Pin On #8, Boys?

We're thinking of starting a Go Fund Me page for the guy who decides where to cut the pins.  The money would be used to send him to Pin Placement School.  And then, whenever someone in our group 5-putts because the pin is sticking sideways out of a hill, he would have to pay a portion of it back.  When the green speeds are running 11+ on the Stimp, you really should be a little more careful.

We had 15 players today.  I think that might be a record.  It was good to see Mike Clark again.  And we always look forward to Jimmy E. and Ryan C. joining the group.  It was tough out there today.  The winds were swirling and the greens were fast.  Two guys out of the 13 finished "plus."  Greg Curran at +2 and Mack Miller at +1.  The other 13 were "minus."

The team of Curran, Voss and Dister were -4, +3, -1.  They tied Coleman, Dunlavy, Moosmann and Aholt on the front at -4 and otherwise swept the back and total.  That was completely attributable to the unbelievable back nine play of Greg Curran ... +4.  The front individual was split by Coleman and Miller at +1.  Crow and Dister split third at Even.  Second to Curran on the back was Dunlavy at +2 and Crow and Purschke split third at +1.  Total was taken by Curran's +2. Miller was second at +1 and Purschke, Crow and Dister split third at -1.

Mike Clark brought the 54-yard 7th to its knees for the Greenie (cart paths were being installed to force a shortening of the hole.)  And newcomer Drew Herrick nailed the Greenie on 14.

Charlie Johnson -1 to 29  Bill Hall -1 to 28.  Terry Moosmann -1 to 27.  Jim Eichelberger -1 to 32.  Drew Herrick -1 to 27. And Ryan Crow has the honor of being the only Oldtimer to see his quota increase.  He is now a 33.  He dropped a 29, added a 31 and that 1/5th of a point kicked his quota all the way up to 33.

The Last Time ... Ever

The group of 9 voted. The result of the vote will prevail. We will award Bob Coleman the Greenie on #7 today even though he forgot to mark it. We will never award a Greenie to someone who forgets to mark the Greenie again. It was a unanimous vote. Bob is recovering from Covid. His mind was momentarily diminished by illness. He gets the last unmarked Greenie ... ever.

Also of note is that two Oldtimers prevailed for Third Place in the Tom Beste Member/Member tourney this past weekend. Messrs. Moosmann and Kossmann had the right stuff. Congrats to you from the group.

Today, the Charlie Voss team ... which also included Johnson and Dister ... swept the team event +6, Even, +6. This commanding victory was totally due to the outstanding play of Charlie Voss who won individually the front and total (+6 and +7) while only tieing the back with Paul Nealis at +1. Tom Dunlavy won 2nd Front and total at +3, +2. Dave Dister won third front at +2 and tied for third with Nealis at +1. Of interest is that all three team members shot their age today. You already know who won the Greenie on #7 and Kenny Triplett won it on #14. The Greenies will remain on #7 and #14 until the end of the season on October 31.

Bob Coleman -1 to 34. Bill Hall -1 to 29. Ken Triplett -3 to 30. Terry Moosmann -1 to 28. Tom Dunlavy +1 to 24. Dave Dister -1 to 26. Charlie Voss +2 to 20 Charlie Johnson -1 to 30.

Leaf rule

Effective immediately the fall leaf rule will be in effect for the Krakow Oldtimers. When it is the team consensus that a lost ball has been hit into an area of significant leaves and it is more than 10 yards away from a hazard a ball may be dropped without penalty. If the consensus is that it has been hit into or within 10 yards of a hazard and cannot be found then it must be considered to be in the hazard and the appropriate penalty assessed. The USGA allows 3 minutes to look for a lost ball.

Records Are Made To Be Broken

It's amazing what slick greens and flags sticking sideway on hills can do the Oldtimers. Well the team of Charilie Voss, Charlie Johnson, Rich Purschke and newcomer Drew Herrick can attest to the fact that pin placements can play havoc on scores. Yes indeed, folks, the team just mentioned set a new Oldtimers record of (drumroll) -30. They were 33 strokes behind the winning team of Aholt, Curran, Miller and Dunlavy. (+6, -3, +3) Team Aholt was the only team to have a "plus" side and it was due to the fine play of Messrs. Aholt and Curran. Dave was +5, -2, +3. Greg was +1, +2, +3 ... the only player to be plus on all three. Aholt wins the front and Blackwell, Dunlavy and Curran split 2nd and 3rd at +1.Curran wins the back at +2. Hall takes 2nd at even and Miller takes 3rd at -1. Curran and Aholt split 1st and 2nd total at +3. Hall and Dunlavy split 3rd at -1. No repot was given on who won the Greenies, but rumor has it that "if you're in the last group ... like Aholt and Curran ... and you don't win the Greenies, you're just cheating yourself." Randy Blackwell -1 to 31. Drew Herrick -2 to 28. Rick Purschke -1 to 22. Charlie Voss -1 to 28. Charlie Johnson -1 to 31. Dave Aholt +1 to 29. Tom Dunlavy -2 to 23 (he dropped a 35.) Yet Another Team Sweep

Moosmann, Purschke, Coleman and Aholt prevailed. Three of the four were positive and one was only slightly negative. They were +1, +2 +3 and they were the only team recording a plus side of the three teams that competed. Out of the 10 players, Aholt easily took the front at +4. Hall and Kossmann split 2nd and 3rd at +1. Charlie Voss and Bob Coleman were +4 on the back. They split 1st and 2nd. Terry Moosmann''s +1 was good enough for third. Charlie Voss takes total at +3 with 2nd and 3rd being split by Aholt and Coleman at +2. Voss takes the Greenie on 7 and Aholt wins 14. 40% of the 10-man field had positive numbers. Five quotas changed. Charlie Voss +1 to 29. Terry Moosmann +1 to 29. Bob Coleman +1 to 35. Dave Aholt -1 to 28. Tim Morris -1 to 25. The October Greenies will be contested on 7 and 14. 14 Players ... 10 New Quotas

Some found the conditions easy, some ... not so much. A beautiful, early autumn day brought a variety of scores. The teams were easy to figure. Team Dunlavy with a big assist by Coleman and an attempt to drag it down by Dister won the front at +6. Team Hall led by Curran, Blackwell and Aholt took the back and total at +2 and +7. My scoresheet is so full of scratch marks from score changes, lets just say Coleman, Dunlavy, Kossmann, Voss, Curran, Blackwell and Aholt all won something individually. I can only hope they got paid close to what they earned. Coleman got the greenie on 5. Aholt scored on 11. Bob Coleman +1 to 34. Dave Dister -1 to 27. Rich Purschke -1 to 23. Leroy Eggert -1 to 26. Border Guard Sets All Time Earnings Record

Bob (Border Guard) Coleman splits 1st and 2nd Individual on the front with Hall and wins $3.50. He does the same on the back with Charlie Voss and rakes in another $3.50. He greedily takes total at +3 all by himself and grabs $4.00. He wins all three legs of the team with pardzies Moosmann, Miller and Hall and stacks $3.75 more on his pile. And to top it off, wins the greenie on #11 for $3.25 more. That's a total of $18.00. Quite a day, Mr. Coleman. And you did it with a 1-over 72 ... on aerated greens. By the way, #5 greenie was taken by Moosmann. Both greenie winners were in the last group. Verifying once again that ... to quote Loghead ... "If you're in the last group and you don't win the Greenies, you're just cheating yourself." There was a 3-way split for third on the front. Loghead takes third on the back. Grizzly (Voss) takes second total and the Lumeber Baron (Hall) takes third total. 10 of the 13 players will have new quotas on Thursday. Coleman +1 to 33. Johnson +1 to 33. Moosmann +1 to 30. What course was he playing?

On a day when Mother Nature reminded us that she can easily turn a 95-degree Wednesday into a 72-degree, swirling-wind, Thursday, Tim (Hardwood) Morris blistered the front nine with a 1-under par +6. He dominated front and total (+4) individual, but his +6 wasn't enough to drag his team of CV, DA and GC into first. That was handled by Dennis (The Menace) Kossmann who was +3 (2nd individual.) He took DD and TD to victory on the front and total. They were +2 ... the only plus team side of the day ... and -2 total. The back was won by BC, RP, BH and TMoosmann at even. Four guys split 3rd on the front at even. The back individual was split three ways at +1. TMoosmann, BH and DD. 2nd total was split by the same three guys at +1. DK won the front greenie and DD won the back. Eleven players competed compliling a cumulative -22. (No reason discussing the pin positions. We all had to play them. We would like to remind the staff that Ed's Revenge is over for the year. Tim Morris +2 to 28. Terry Moosmann +1 to 29. Dave Dister +1 to 29. Charlie Voss -1 to 27. Greg Curran -1 to 27. The Brutality of September 20

Nine Oldtimers wore light-colored, loose-fitting clothing today.  The temperature was forecast to hit 93 with high humidity to boot.  Somebody also cut new pin placements.  I doubt seriously if the culprit with the hole-cutter was actually an employee.  They were dandies ... just right for very fast greens on a very hot day.  Your Acting Commish hit two greens in regulation today ... the greenie holes ... 5 and 11.  I'll be telling you all about my winning shot on five after I skim over the the results.

The team of TD, DA and LE (I list them with the top contributor first and then the lesser contributors in descending order) won the front at +2.  The team of BC, DK and CV won the back and total at +1 and Even.  TD easily won the front, tied for first on the back and won total with a tasty +5, +2, +7.  BC split the honors on the back with his +2. RP, BC and DK split 2nd and 3rd on the front with +1s.  CV gets 3rd on the back with +1.  BC wins 2nd total at +3 and BH wins 3rd total at -1.

OK, now for me.  I got to 5 with a swirling wind challenging a back-center pin.  I decided to feather a little 11-wood in there to hold the green.  All this thought took 2.4 seconds, because we noticed BC looking at his watch on 4.  He hadn't taken his second shot yet, but he was noticeably annoyed at the pace of play.  Anyway, I took a hefty swing and hit the ground about 1.5 inches behind the ball.  The force closed the face and turned my little butter-cut into a rope-hook that hit the bank above the bunker in an ideal place.  The ball popped onto the green, ran down the hill (yes, the front of 5 is higher than the back.  No answer as to why) and ended up about 20 feet past the pin ... on the green ... closer than my teammates.  I curled the 20-foot-right-to-lefter into the hole ... and even with a birdie shot my worst, competitive round of the year ... a -7 86.  Hall was on the phone while I was creating magic and was visibly surprised to find that it was my shot, not Purschke's.

BH -1 to 30.  CV -1 to 28.  TD +1 to 25. LE -1 to 28. DA -1 to 29.
